The amount of games Gen 3 had were awesome though, even if they had varying qualities. Everyone saying gen3 was isolating are very on point though, it really was a period when most people jumped off the Pokemon bandwagon and it was relegated to fansites, it's honestly weird even just reading old fanfics before Gen4 was around and seeing what people were writing would be evolutions or mechanics to come nowadays.
The loss of transferring Pokemon from 2 - 3 was felt, but I think it was more that the GBA marked a complete shift. At that point those who got Gen 1, even 2 had to go out and buy not only a new handheld, but a new game. And unlike Johto, it wouldn't be as blatantly Kanto+ so they had to see only the new pokemon until I want to say...the 3rd gym leader?
So you can say that idea is where the origin of "these new pokemon all suck" may have started.
