Normally I'm all for skipping filler, but even Pokemon's best episodes don't really have important stories to tell. You're literally supposed to enjoy it on a weekly basis, it's an easy-going show that's primary purpose is to show off Pokemon, tell a short story where people and Pokemon work together, and maybe also be a little funny.

Ash is not a character with depth, he doesn't go through anything important, he's a pleasant, simple vehicle for the audience to interact with more interesting characters like Team Rocket, the gym leaders, companions, and Pokemon. People who waited 20+ years for something of value to happen with Ash were fucking crazy and you can see that in the 'anipoke' fandom, these people don't have a normal relationship with media at all.

This. The "core story" of Pokemon is "characters catch Pokemon and then win some milestone battles", there's no point in following some retarded list so you can watch every gym battle just to confirm that yes, Ash did in fact beat that gym leader too. You already knew that was going to happen long before you watched the episode, so why not watch a fan favorite filler that presents a more interesting plot instead?

same anon, I should clarify that I don't think anyone should feel the need to watch every episode, nor do I think there's much point in cultivating the 'ultimate list' to 'skip all the fillers'. I like James, so if I hear that there's a new episode about James, I'm probably gonna tune in. Otherwise, I might tune in if I'm up and have nothing better to do on Friday. Pokemon is meant to be consumed on the same level as Peanuts or Garfield

It's weird, I agree with the sentiment, animation takes a LOT of fucking time and I don't like the idea of devaluing it to such a degree, but at the same time, the Pokemon anime specifically is nothing more than a long running commercial for the games and toys, there are definitely parts of it that can count as art, especially in SM/JN where they get much more loose with the character design and animation, but you'd be hard pressed to tell me there's anything worthwhile about filler episodes from the middle of Hoenn or Sinnoh or something.

The single best Hoenn episode is one where Ash gets lost in the fog and stumbles over a mysterious lady who needs his help, and who is eventually revealed to be a time traveler stuck in the wrong time. It's very atmospheric and twilight zone-y and has a very unique and interesting plot.

It's also complete filler, so all the fags that speedwatch the series will end up skipping this one over some boring ass cotd plot that's "super important and unskippable" because one of Brock's Pokemon evolves in it in a scene that could've been tossed into any other episode.

This is a stance I've had forever. I'll NEVER understand why people feel obligated to watch the gym battle episodes because they "progress the story". A lot of them aren't even particularly good, especially in gen 3 and gen 5 (hell, I'd go as far as saying EVERY good Best Wishes episode is filler).

For the pokemon anime, fillers are literally the only interesting part. None of the main story points are good. At least fillers have nice interactions with the pokemon and characters. With the important episodes you either get a butchered version of the game's plot or just set up for Ash to lose another league

Yes. That's the show they made.
They wanted it to be about episodic adventures of an icon rather than the development of a character. So you have to watch the "filler" to really watch the show.
The issue with the ashnime is that they also wanted it to be about a developing character which clashed against the other vision.

It's not even that anymore, it's people treating entertainment like fucking chores they need to suffer through in order to "win" the ability to say you experienced the thing on social media. So people read summaries instead of books, follow "watch guides" for TV shows and watch them at double speed and savestate their way through video games with walkthrough in hand because they're not there to enjoy the experience, they're there to get it over with so they can say they had it.

It's incredibly incredibly sad.

Read the replies, people are talking about how retarded it is because the "unimportant" episodes are usually the least boring ones while the "important" episodes tend to be formulaic. If you just want to watch some episodes instead of all, you should be watching the actual fan favorites and not just the gym battles. You already knew Ash beat all the gym leaders and won all the badges before you even started watching the show, if you're that starved for time, those should be the LEAST important episodes for you to watch.
