Do you guys consider that Magikarp/Feebas ep the first DP filler? That ep with the Ludicolo/Golduck was filler-ish unless you consider Piplup spinning with bubblebeam to be important. After this the Bidoof episode is a pure filler, and that masked Roserade episode.

DP took 21 eps in to have a pure filler.

Depends. The Magikarp Salesman being involved makes it not self-contained as a one-and-done. Same as if Butch and Cassidy showed up in an otherwise self-contained episode.

That was his last appearance too, wasn't it? I'm not sure if he himself is enough to make something non-filler though. For example the other eps he appeared in were important because it was the ep Lickitung was traded for Wobbufett, or the ep James releases Victreebel in Johto and Casey was in that ep. In Hoenn he appears in the ep James get Chimecho in Fortree city. He was also in the Spoink episode, but that one was filler.

His actions in the Spoink episode are referenced in the Fortree City episode, which is the only justification I can give for it not being "filler." If the DP one is his last one, and the episode is skippable regardless, then sure. It's not exactly a compelling episode to begin with.

Watching early DP kinda reminds me why people used to compare Dawn to Misty back in the day. Dawn gets angry and bickers a lot in these early eps, like at Ash in Nando's ep or when she was getting her hair, exploding at Paul for forgetting her at Roark's Gym, and losing her patience with Pachirisu, etc.

I don't exactly remember where they changed it, but her personality became a lot more girly and soft spoken as DP went on. She still remained outgoing and energetic but this type of snarky behavior of hers died down a bit. She almost feels like the second coming of Misty in these early episodes, even more than Iris did in BW.

Doc Brock was a good filler. Ash and Dawn are left in charge of a random cabin they shanghaied in the mountains and basically played house, while Brock was off to get medicine. Also a Zapdos appeared. That was cool.

I really wanted them to lean more into the domestic sitcom tropes they seemed to be pointing towards. They had Ash be the dumb/incompetent/lazy dad, while Dawn was the housekeeping mom figure, even with a bit of Dawn laying into him for falling asleep on the couch. I wish they had taken it just a bit further; have Dawn smack Ash over the head with a rolling pin, have them discuss how to discipline Bunneary for dressing up like a slut to school, and have Ash complain about a fat woman walking into the shoe store that day. Shit would be so cash.

No one should doubt that Dawn could win the Ashbowl. The real question is if Ash could win the Dawnbowl.

Dawn just beat her mother's friend and won her third ribbon. It turns out that in Sinnoh at least, one can get up to four ribbons in one year and then complete the circuit in a later year. This did not seem to be the case in Hoenn, as May lamented having to restart her ribbon collecting if she missed the Pacifidlog Contest. Ignoring the fact that it's most likely that the writers just changed the rules to fit what they were trying to do, that does lessen the number of Contests held in a given year from the ~1200 estimated given how many Coordinators compete in the Grand Festival every year. Still, even if it's one-third, that's still a Contest per day on average, so Mr. Sukizo and Mr. Contesta are still grinding.

Math time! Dawn's sixth contest happens 94 episodes in. May's was 104 episodes in, and Serena's was the Master Class at 112 episodes into XY. This is Serena's last appearance in the math game. Though I will also mention that May and Serena outpace Dawn in one important number stat: May evolves her Wurmple into Silcoon in episode 24 of AG, while Serena evolves Fenniken into Braixen in episode 64 of XY. Dawn has yet to evolve a Pokemon. Presumably her Swinub will be the first.

Cyrus in the games is probably the least subtle major antagonist of them all. He meets the player in Mt. Coronet after the second badge and announces that he's the leader of Team Galactic, and says he wants to create a new world. He's still better than Lysandre, who does the same thing, but in a public cafe, and everyone just laughs him off.

Cyrus in the anime though is actually interesting. He's clearly evil (this is a kids' cartoon after all), but he hides his evil so you can accept that the characters don't realize it yet. He's also much more affable. In the games he's meant to be stoic and robotic. In the anime, he seems like a normal, well-meaning dude, who is secretly evil. When the anime deviates from the games with the evil team of the gen, things seem to go well.

This is just my opinion but u hope they never bring Ash back 26 years is toonlong for a character story. He should have won the johto league be the champion of kanto then pass on the torch having him exist for so long i think contributed to ratings decline. Heck i hated Jaden at first when yugi was retired but after watching the whole of GX i may like Jaden more than yugi and in hindsight it was a good thing to retire yugi at the height of his powers to maintain his legacy. All i see with Ash is oh we need to retire him lets give him evry single protagonist powers we can jam into a character plus a shit epilogue. It felt so unnatural and unearned. Why are the executives like this also fuck the writers.

Watching Kenny's first episode/Contests, he really should of just been a one-shot character. He didn't really need to return after his debut, as Piplup also beat his Prinplup here. The problem was stretching a already flat character thin over multiple appearances.

Well, Barry's in the anime. That's cool. Everyone loves and remembers Barry from the game.

So, near the end of Battle Dimension, and the Dawnbowl participants seem to be the following:

I just realized the book Roy was interested in had ghost types on the cover - I like how Horizons is putting in all these small nods to HO GE TOR's final evolution.

Given the way Quaxly acts, I could see it evolving at some point too. I think Sprig hasn't gotten any yet because Liko's relationship is still pretty new - they just showed off how the cat gets jealous of other pokemon getting attention over it.

I'm half and half on it. It seems like the duck is pretty on Dot's case to not be a gross, friendless neet. I could see her coming out of her shell also going hand in hand with the duck getting its evos. But it's also possible they keep it a quaxly to keep the Gurumin segements unchanged, so it really depends on what they do with Dot for Horizons.

No she is not and you need to acknowledge that. You probably wants to believe in an idealistic world where people care more about personality and character over appearance. But the truth is that people cares more about appearance than personality when it comes to female characters. Serena is the direct proof of that. Many bland female characters become popular and many garbage anime gets mainstream popularity because of their eye-candy as shown by Rent-A-Girlfriend, To Love-ru and Okaa-san Online.

If TPC wanted Riko to be popular than they should have came up with better design since her design is bland with a generic sideswept multi-colored hair with the bottom part are curved like Selene's hair. They made it even worst by putting an ugly hairclip right at the middle of her hair. Maybe TPC should have use Seele as a model for Riko's design since they both share similar black and blue hair.

Decided to watch the haunted house episode before work, since I just wanted to start my day off in a bad mood. Of all the haunted house episodes I've seen, this one actually made sense. Ash and co. weren't scared because spooky shit kept happening and they forgot that Ghost Pokemon exist, but rather because the Rotom seemed to keep actively trying to fuck them up. I'm kind of annoyed that they moved the Old Chateau to Canalave, if only because I figured they just skipped the haunted house episode after Ash and co. went through Eterna Forest without encountering it.

Another example would be that Cheryl search for honey arc. The second ep introduces Gardenia which is of course important and Ash loses her in that ep. But the first and third Cheryl eps could be considered filler because it's self-contained and it doesn't lead to anything after and she never appears again. But since Gardenia appeared in the middle of it, it sort of makes it important.

Ash meeting and Elite 4 member, or in this case, a stat trainer, seems like an important thing. Really, this is just individual preference and nitpicking though. Another example is Ash/Dawn have their first tag battle episode with those champ twin brothers with Quilava/Croconaw. On its own it doesn't seem important, but it's the first time Ash and Dawn tag battle together so I like it for that reason. Granted the ep feels like a poor re-tread of the far superior "The Bicker, the Better" from AG with the battle of the sexes argument thrown in.

Why didn't they include Silver? He would've made a good rival given how aimless a number of the Johto filler was to Ash, and it's clear they weren't interested in asshole gary at that point anyway.

I notice that even as bad a season can be viewed, it's helped out a lot by having more rivals and characters to bounce off of. It's why I still say BW is fun to watch if only for the gaggle of rivals and frenemies with Bianca, Stephan, Burgandy, Georgia, Luke. Trip & Cameron were flukes though. why even include Trip for a worse Paul when Cheren was right there

I agree. For example, I hated Fidough when it was announced and when I saw it in-game as a shitty meme mon, but when I saw the recentmost Horizons episode with one, I started to see it in a better light, and go, "okay, I see why it's cute."

THAT'S the power of the anime to give viewers a second chance on mons they wouldn't even normally like, and I really do think gen8 as a whole suffered for it. I know I had second thoughts on Dracovish after seeing it in the anime given it completely ignores the pokedex entries with how charming it was.

So with Galactic Battles, I switched to the subs, since this is the part where Pocket Monsters Subs starts holding them on their tracker. I could've done it ten episodes prior, but I forgot. It's also not like the Diamond and Pearl dub is bad either, but I will say that I've had less of an urge to skip Team Rocket sections now that they're in Japanese. Meowth saying "dig it" or "lugs" had nothing to do with it.

Already though, I've gotten a pretty nice gift. Byron uses the phrase "exceed my corpse," or in Nipponese, "Watashi no Shikabane o Koete Yuke," which I think is usually translated "over my dead body." It's possible this is also a reference to an RPG from the PS1 called "Ore no Shikabane wo Koete Yuke." Hard to tell, but it sounds metal as fuck. I checked the English dub, and the first time he uses it against Roark, they just have him call Roark a sad excuse for a Gym Leader. Against Ash later, the dub just translates it as "You better prepare for the battle of your life." My impression based on context (and next to no Nibongo in my repertoire) is he's basically telling Roark and Ash that if they want to beat him, they're going to have to kill him. Which again, is metal as fuck.

With only six episodes in between his victory over Fantina and his victory over Byron, I think this is the shortest intermission in between Gym battles Ash has had since the OS (without checking, Brock and Misty being two episodes apart has got to be the quickest overall). The only one I can think of that may be shorter is Ash's battle against Roxanne and his first battle against Brawly, which happen four episodes apart. To be fair though, Ash loses hard against Brawly, and it takes him 11 episodes to beat him after that initial battle. Aside from his battle against Wattson (9 episodes after), the rest of AG's Gym Leaders took at least 11 episodes to get to. Frontier Brains are obviously different. Outside of AG, Ash's win against Lenora is followed by 7 episodes until he battles Burgh, ditto for Clay and Skyla, and Clemont and Valerie.

Apparently their early subs aren't really good. I forget all the details as it was explained to me, but after about episode 90 or so they got a translator who actually knew the language and he revealed that the first 90 or so were basically guesses by their previous translator. I'm always up for an excuse to rewatch the May stuff though.

In retrospect it's sad Buizel never evolved. Unlike Corphish who the writers wanted to remain comical, Buizel had a tough attitude of wanting to get stronger and reminds me of how Treecko was in AG. I know its because Buizel wanted to battle Lucian, but it's weird as fuck to see Dawn battle an Elite 4 member at the very beginning of DP. Even if this was in late DP or whatever, the fact that we have one of Ash's female companions challenging an Elite 4 member is shocking.

Thanks to JN, champion and world champion mean nothing. A 10 year old with pokemon he hatched/caught two weeks ago can become the strongest trainer in the world, so the weight of Elite 4, which is less than champion, means less than nothing.
As for before JN, nobody brought it up for the same reason nobody really brings up Paul vs Cynthia. It's an elite trainer demolishing a non-elite trainer, as was expected back then when the writing had some semblance of quality to it. It's not surprising.

Early DP almost feels like a completely different show than what the series is known for. Ash's main pokemon at this point feels like Turtwig, there is no indication Ash would ever get Chimchar and it doesn't join for over 50 episodes. You still think Ash is going to use Aipom and Dawn is going to keep Buizel.

Other than Paul and Zoey, none of the other rivals give the impression they'll appear again (Nando and Kenny could have been one-offs), and even Team Galactic doesn't appear yet. It's pretty weird given what a huge part Infernape is for Ash in DP knowing Chimchar isn't even part of the main cast for the first 50 episodes.

First seasons generally just seem to be them finding out what the series is going to be like. I doubt they have everything planned from the very beginning, just broad strokes. XY you don't get any hint of Team Flare until the Mega Evolution specials, and even then the whole Zygarde part is fairly limited up to that point.

I'm pretty sure the Aipom/Buizel trade was always planned (Aipom took interest in Contests back in AG watching May's Grand Festival), and Paul was probably always going to release Chimchar (the signs were there), but in early DP you don't think it will happen yet till it does. Seeing Dawn battle with a strong Buizel almost feels wrong knowing how little Buizel is associated with her for the rest of the series.

Turtwig probably would have been Ash's star pokemon this series instead of Chimchar had he never gotten it. Imagine Torterra taking down Paul instead of Infernape? Also Cynthia doesn't debut till over 40 episodes in, it's amazing what an impact Cynthia had on the anime when she doesn't even appear till toward the end of the first year. Hell I even forgot Gary is in this series because he didn't even return again yet.

Why did the writers reference "Ignorance is Blissey" from early Johto as late as DP? The kids watching DP would not even get that reference. Hell, even some older fans probably didn't if they skipped over most of Johto. This was the only time Jessie' past studying to be a pokemon nurse was ever brought up again too.

even though DP is a direct continuation of AG, there is a certain point early in DP where it changes to something completely different from any other Pokemon series. I don't mean different as in how XY was different, but I mean as every aspect of the story felt to be something unique. It felt like DP was or could have or was supposed to be its own series. As if they already had an ending in mind for DP but changed it last minute to continue Ash's journey.

I believe that the contributing factors to DP's uniqueness are, Ash and Dawn's relationship(romantic), Dawn as a character, Cythina, Cynthia as a "face" of a final hurdle, The pokemon league, Team Galactic, Hunter J's ever-present and real threat, TR, and Looker with the international police. I will make another more in-depth post one day but that is it for now.

while pic related is a shipping image, and Ash and the relationship do have something to do with the uniqueness of DP, I think that the image also captures how DP felt overall as a series.

I just watched AG before this and even though it was more plot focused than the OS, there was still a good chunk of generic filler episodes that could have been completely skipped. In DP it feels like there's multiple plots and recurring characters appearing at once (because it was), and that's why it felt like something was always happening.

Yeah, that will always be seen as a "sorry it has to be this way" pull from the writers, same with the reason Dawn did not follow through with going to Kanto with Ash. Almost as if the reason were so bad for both they wanted us to know it was out of their control.

I also forgot to mention how important world-building was in DP. The atmosphere felt perfect, Sinnoh was a breath of fresh cool air. the forests were big, the region was cold, and it felt nice.

DP also had a lot of fillers and more repetitive than later series. The reason DP worked so well was due to the cast. As I said before, interesting characters and their dynamic interaction are the backbone of a long running show. If a show has good cast then even a pure filler would feel like an awesome episode, if a show has garbage cast then even a plot-heavy non-filler episode feels boring and tiresome.

PM never subbed most of DP, those episodes you're referring to is just 4 or 5 or so. They did a couple DP subs during the XY days with an anon from here as the translator (basically that guy's favorite episodes), which included at least one of the episodes that had a removed shitsub in the past.

Most "fansubs" for early DP have nothing to do with PM and are just some random retard that threw the dub script on raws and did some search and replace to change the dub names to the nip ones. Literally just the dub script with all dub errors and rewrites intact.

Up to now, I've seen all of the OS (about 20 years ago when it first aired), XY, AG and about half of DP (since early February or so). Coming in fresh from the OS to XY, I definitely got that the show had changed pretty substantially, but going from XY to AG, I felt like I could've picked up from the OS with AG, even 20 years later, and not had any problems. I think if you had shown me the first few episodes of DP like two months ago before I was watching AG, though, I probably would've said it looked and felt more like XY than AG, because the discontinuity there is so great. Most of the stuff you hit on seems pretty accurate. I'll also add that it looks substantially different: Much more muted color palette, lots of blues and cool colors, and they end up doing filler in non-descript valleys and plateaus than forests. They also do seem to be building to some sort of finale, whether for Ash or otherwise.

Since I'm only halfway through DP, maybe I'll change my mind later and I'll eat shit by saying this now, but I really don't see Dawn as a romantic lead. When I watched XY and only had Misty to compare to, I felt Serena's romance subplot (which is most of what people remember her character for) was fairly inconsequential and more about making fun of Serena's crush than actual shipteasing. I just figured that the other Pokegirls had their own fair share of shipping moments and Serena's was just more explicit, if kind of trollbait. Having now seen May and half of Dawn's arcs, I realize that Serena was the best the Pokemon Company was capable of. I'm not bashing Pearlshippers by any means, because shipping is all about enjoying the dynamic of a pair, and Ash and Dawn have a fantastic and wholesome dynamic. I just don't see the intention of pairing them up in the series.

Another thing worth keeping in mind is that there weren't captions back then. Everyone had to translate by ear, meaning that if you misheard shit the translation would be wrong, if there's a word you're unfamiliar with in the line it's harder to look it up if you can't quite make out what's said, and if characters are mumbling, enunciating weirdly or there's loud background music you sometimes just have to go with your best guess.
Fansubs in general were much lower quality all across the line back then because modern luxuries just didn't exist.

You mean how Goh and Koharu were unlikeable characters that needed Ash and other past characters carry their show. To the point the series ignored many of Galar gym leaders while giving lesser screentime to actual interesting Characters. Ash and Trio carried the show for 26 years and made them worked no matter how many bad decision the show has made.

Wrong, only self inserters claim that because they want a serious anime with serious protagonist fighting a serious villain. They can never understand anything because they consider their self inserted fanfiction as standard for everything. Goh and Koharu were uninteresting because they had no interesting at all and PM's attempt to shove them in the show only made thing worst.

Just look at how good Amazon Prime special was where Ash reunited with Brock and Dawn unlike all the sinnoh special that tried to shove Koharu.

And just look at how MPM was, even without Goh and Koharu the show was a colossal failure because Ash is fundamentally uninteresting. They had to bring up Latias from the M05 to make the episodes interesting because the movies are the few instances where the anime has some amount of depth or uniqueness

False, its only not entertaining to self inserters. The same group that insisted that BW TRio was good and complain about everybody hating that version.

TRio were still the funnier and interesting part of PM series due to their dialogue, dynamic interaction and willingness to destroy the forth wall.

MPM was still a success and more entertaining the HZ episode. The only problem was that it was marketed as an epilogue so people wanted closure rather than fillers. If it was an ordinary pokemon anime that is not an epilogue then people would not have ranted about it,

Did you completely miss how people loved Ash on MPM 02 and wanted him to behave like that again?

MPM was absolutely not entertaining. It was a giant missed opportunities just like with everything that has Ash in it. It's funny because you bring up one of the few genuinely decent MPM episodes because it literally proves how shitty the rest of the episodes were. Because Ash is a soulless husk of a character

Do you watch the anime? Anybody with a braincells can see that TRio's dynamic has been remain consistantly funnier and intereting. If anything the current dynamic between HZ cast is a better example of the slate and superficial dynamic.

In other word you never actually watched any Team Rocket episode. Many interesting thing XY, SM, PM comes from them including the pokemon they caught and interacts with. Even their Rotom-phone has more personality than the cast of Horizon. We also seen they as multiple dimensional character where they suppose to be the bad guy but already aware of a sudden line they won't cross even more money.
