Eight for I like HZ. It reminds me of the energy and atmosphere that I was encountered with in OS as a child, when everything was so new and unknown. Some of the characters have golden potential and decent setups to kick off well in their progression. Overall it feels like entering the world of Pokemon again for a second time, something I really loved going anew from zero on all front. Soundtracks are sometimes placed on wrong place, but I love Conisch's work for it so far.
HZ and OS are both equally good in my eyes from how they are able to pertain the interest enough to keep tuning in for fridays.

Then he stumbled across online forums like serebii, where he wasn't immediately ridiculed for his schizophrenic copes or believes, which enabled a idealistic complex that allowed him to become fully absorbed by this one characters for years to come before getting kicked for being the schizophrenic Faggot.
Then he stumbled on 4chan and /padt/ and that's where the downward hill ride truly began. He got the attention he craved and after years of just rejection because he can't realize he needs to grow the fuck up, he stopped caring about the line between raw disgust of him and basic tolerance. All of that wrapped itself around to his self-insert TrAsh. It all happened because of him.

And he felt threatened by one thing alone: Changes. And that change happened last december. And got angry over it. He was angry that others are able to live without the thing he built his whole existence on. And he became that same faggot like the kid who would rather break toys than letting others have fun.

Out of all the kids anime Dai Seto wrote, Battle Spirit Toppa Bashin seems like the only one intended for the target audience. He should have taken inspiration from that instead of trying to make Horizon more like Eureka Seven.

Anyway......... I think Pokemon Coordinator is the best profession for the new protagonist. Considering gym battle require the protagonist to gain huge amount of experience or get treated as a Gary Stu. Even then, I'm sure a few will hang on to the hope that he'll be put into the series after Horizons, or the one after that. I checked the OP to see if the previous thread was really deleted. Me and the other recap anons were having a pretty fun discussion last night, and that thread had minimal involvement from he-who-shall-not-be-named. I'm not gonna whine about bans or whatever, but it's actually kind of nuts and upsetting that all of that got wiped when, as far as I can tell, none of us engage with him during his fits.

Well, whatever. I discovered during another Galactic two-parter Barry's famous line in Japanese isn't about fining people, but demanding compensation. It sounds significantly less dumb that way, but to be fair to the dub, it was just following the standards set by how the games were translated.

Having watched XY first, I always assumed that Jessie's time as a Coordinator/Performer was meant to be a recurring gag, and that she kept losing, but still somehow made it into the Princess Cup (or w/e it's called). Now I see that she's actually fairly competent as a Coordinator, and wins or gets far in Contests fairly regularly. It makes me wonder all the more why her first Performance Showcase in XY was such a flop for comedic purposes. Surely the skills transferred over?

So in terms of math, this is Dawn's seventh Contest at episode 113. May's seventh (Pacifidlog Town) happened at 116, so that gap is narrow as hell by now. Serena never had a seventh Performance. In fact, her equivalent to the Grand Festival, the Master Class, had already come and gone as of episode 113 of XY. There's really no more stats to include for Serena from here on out, which is a bit sad.

Jessie's contest journey from the beginning of AG through DP is actually really good. In some of the early Hoenn ones Jessie used to cheat (attaching a rainbow device to Dustox), or she just did poorly and had no idea what she was doing. She started to get better at Contests as AG went on, but still lost them all.

Once you get into DP it feels like Jessie finally grasped what Contests are about, and although she still loses, she has some genuine skill as a coordinator now,. It's actually really refreshing because if you pay attention to Jessie's arc she has two full series of Contests (AG and DP), and we see how she gradually improves.

I really like the Pokeringer episodes, aside from the fact that the ending is predictable: Ash evolves his bird Pokemon. It happened with his Flechling in XY (though that was a sky battle, not a Pokeringer specifically) and it happened with his Tailow in AG. The Pokeringers at least have the combat element nailed down a bit more, and with James and Paul getting involved, they're certainly more interesting than the sky battle episode of XY.

Just as a note, when I first started writing this, I misremembered that Ash's Flechinder evolved into Talonflame during the air relay episode of XY. When I went back to my notes, I saw that that was actually an episode meant to show off his Noibat, which...I think that's the most uninteresting Pokemon of XY, to be honest. Flechinder evolved while fighting Moltres. But still, they basically had the same type of episode twice. Really wish they had just brought back Pokeringer, but it does seem to be the case that although XY borrows ideas from early gens quite often, there is almost no attempt to establish any continuity.

Just watched Cynthia's debut episode. Paul loses Chimchar, Weavile, Murkrow and Torterra. Two of his pokemon were unevolved forms, and Weavile wasn't strong enough. Torterra did manage to bring Garchomp down to one knee before it KO'd it with one Brick Break. I think people got the illusion her Garchomp was all powerful because early DP Paul wasn't that strong yet.

The impression I get from my first time watching is that DP is AG with experience behind it. They have a series under their belt writing a female deuteragonist, they've got the Contests better planned out, and they seem to have learned from their mistakes regarding the wet fart of Team Magma/Aqua. Cynthia's a cool champion, and Paul's a compelling rival. I'm sure they'll book the finish to the League and Grand Festival well, too, Tobias notwithstanding.

Still, this third season seems like it's in a bit of a drag. There are some great one-off episodes, like Dawn getting her Mamoswine to behave, but by my reckoning, unless the League and Grand Festival are extra long, they have a lot of episodes still left to fill and they can't keep teasing the Galactic/Hunter J showdown forever. As always, I'm willing to be proven wrong.

I also love how much Sinnoh lore we get about Dialga/Palkia way before their arc even starts. In the Eterna Museum episode Nando explains Dialga/Palkia and the 3 Pixies, and then Cynthia explains more about it in her episode and how she'd like to meet "the origin of all Pokemon." This is even before the movies or the Galactic arc even begins.

They did a much better job here than anything they did prior, or even after with legendaries.

The general theory is that OLM were aware that a gen 2 remake was going to happen during gen 4 (since work on that obviously started years before its release) but had no idea Kris wasn't going to be in it, either because they assumed wrong or because GF hadn't actually decided to replace her yet. The Marina cameos stop about a year into DP, which is probably the point they learned they had picked the ONE single character for their gen 2 remake promotion they shouldn't have.

Just skimmed through the 2 eps of that 1995 OVA, just as I thought, it's more of a romantic comedy than a hentai. I think DP had the strongest first year of eps of any season, not counting Kanto. It really was one banger after another, and only very few dull episodes. And even the fillers aren't bad, none that are any worse than the worse johto/hoenn fillers so far.

Not the dub, DP's dub is terrible and pre-XY to present days, was TPCi at their very worst IMO.

Chain smoker Ash alone with TRio alliterating every fucking line was intolerable. I can't get the awful dub out of my head every time I see that Series, even in Japanese, traumatic shit.

Pokemon is about the only Anime 4Kids actually got right overseas that someone else fucked up in TPCi, not them. Natochenny is still inferior to Taylor with close to two decades as the lead, just pathetic.

This was the first gym battle that's had me smiling in decades. It's so refreshing to see an actual ebb and flow of a gym battle without asspull plot armor prevail in the last minute. I was a bit worried there when Hogator started stomping, but it clearly didn't have mastery over the move. Colza had to make his pokemon stand still for almost a full minute to give Hogator the time to learn the move properly. That's the sign of a real gym leader, an obstacle to overcome and a mentor to guide.

This was the perfect episode. Had great characterization for both Nemona and Brassius. Nemona isn't dumbed down to be a beginner trainer and she's just as energetic as in the games. Brassius always felt so boring in the games but he's full of personality here. Great development for Roy and Fuecoco and a new move learnt. Amazing battery that is both fun and unpredictable without relying on bullshit. Great comedic moments too like Sudowoodo's Taunt face. Most of all the episode makes tons of references to SV. This just makes me sad that we've been missing out on THIS over whatever we got in JN with Ash

And I'm glad it did. It would've been horrible if it won against a gym leader despite being a weakling with only 2 battles before. But I'm also glad that it's toughening up a lot, it was able to take rock type attacks and dodge quite swiftly compared to how lazy it was when it was training in Episode 7

I think is still a bit too soon to tell. Roy wants to become strong enough to battle and catch Rayquaza and today's Gym battle was basically a test to prove his resolve. While it is possible to become super strong without the need to take on gyms, i can see it as Roy's first option for getting stronger. It's really impressive that we haven't gotten a single filler yet. That's one of the best parts of HZ's formula, it's all connected episode to episode and telling a larger narrative instead of what the ashnime did with few plot stuff and filler in between. And the big question is, what does a filler look like for Horizons? Are Liko and Roy going to happen upon a CotD needing a problem solved like much of the Ashnime? Will they catch more Pokemon, or do something completely different? My hope is we get character-focused episodes more often for the Rising Volteccers and Explorers, but at some point they also have to show off the Paldeamons in order to make the anime promote the games. I'm excited to see how they accomplish that.

For the record, Giratina is after Arriving in Style, Arceus is after Promoting Healthy Tangrowth, and Zoroark is right before the League begins.

That would have been fun and pretty creative from the staff, a unique approach but I guess they kinda re-threaded the idea giving Dawn mamoswine.

Got up to the Ambipom depature episode, and two things struck out to me. 1. Ambipom got to do a lot over the 100+ episodes it's been in Ash and Dawn's care, and the ping pong thing isn't any more ridiculous than Ash releasing his Primeape only a few episodes after it beat the shit out of his whole team. 2. Brock and James have a consistent bromance whenever they're at a Contest/battle/whatever and James is incognito. As the more mature members of their respective trios, it's a nice touch. It's a shame Team Rocket is a bunch of sociopaths, because blah, blah, I've whined about the TRio enough in the past.

The writers chickened out I think. Buizel was seen as tough and Aipom was female and liked Contests so they thought the trade was a good idea. But seeing Dawn work with a tough Buizel probably would have worked better writing wise and given us some cool Contests. Granted I liked Ash with Buizel anyway so I can't complain much.

Even Dawn having two water types wouldn't have been an issue because Buizel's moves and fighting style was completely different than Piplup's.

It slipped my mind that Dawn had her eighth Contest, and thus some more math time. May's eight Contest was her Grand Festival, which happened 122 episodes into AG, while Dawn's eighth was 121 episodes into DP. It took a while, but it seems the disparity between the two finally culminated. From here on out, I'm not really sure how viable comparisons are. May has additional Contests, but those happen in Kanto, after the League. Just for the record for later, her ninth one would be AG 145, and I'd be shocked if Dawn hasn't had at least two more by the time DP 145 comes around. Given how condensed Battle Frontier is, comparing the two might not really yield anything interesting. Serena's also long gone at this point, unfortunately, so this leaves two data points off.

For some reason, I got the impression in BDSP that Candice was like a model or something. I looked it up on the normal sites, and I guess I headcanon'd that. That being said, why did they decide to make her the teacher in Snowpoint? Did the writers just think she looked too much like Roxanne not to do that?

Oh, I figured. May has 7 Contests in Kanto (counting the Grand Festival). There's not enough DP episodes left at this point for Dawn to realistically do that. desu, I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for with these comparisons, but there's something there, I'm sure.

I also noticed in DP a lot of the Contests are only 1-part after the Wallace Cup. Dawn's first two contests (the one she loses to Zoey and the one she beats Kenny in), were 2-parts, and of course the Wallace Cup is 3-parts, but after that all the Contests are only 1-part till the one she gets her 5th ribbon in.

AG had a lot more 2-part contests, which I found strange DP didn't do the same.

I had noticed -- aside from Kanto, anyway, where pretty much all of May's Contests are one parters. I'd imagine it's because Dawn's rivals are recurring people (mostly Zoey and Kenny), but May has a number of one-off rivals besides Drew and Harley. Each of them needs a two-parter to set the stakes. Thinking on it, all of Serena's Performances except her first (where she gets the ribbon from Ash) and the Master Class are also one-parters. There's an interesting conclusion to get at here, that isn't just "this girl bad, this girl good."

Yeah, in BF May had a lot more one-part contests due to her rivals already being established. I suppose it doesn't really matter, but the 2-part contests generally have longer appeal rounds and more focus on battles before the finals. If you notice the writers tend to montage or "off-screen" a lot of the contest battles in the earlier rounds till whoever the final person Dawn faces. I actually liked the random people May battled in the AG contests before her main opponent, for example in Harley's debut contest she beats a random guy with Suskrit with her Bulbasaur, and we see the whole battle on-screen.

I guess the writers kinda stopped caring about showing random battles besides the final one and if Jessie was in them whoever she lost to.

Just watched the ep Dawn lost the appeal round. Weirdly her appeal was more impressive than Jessie's yet Jessie made it through instead. They should have shown Dawn mess up a bit in the appeal to show why the judges didn't let her go on. Sadly Nando/Zoey's battle was off-screen, how did people feel they skipped that back in the day? I guess the writers thought we wouldn't care to see two rivals battle each other yet (but we do see it in the Grand Festival).

Aside from Johanna doing the scrunch face while watching, it wasn't really apparent that something was off. I figured the deal was, "good, but not top 8 good," but the conditions were kind of vague to begin with. I think the explanation that comes with her next loss makes sense, but not really applied to this one.
