i literally cannot see a single reason to play singles over doubles in a serious/competitive/whatever context. can anyone enlighten me, or are singles players just stupid?

Singles represents the pokemon fantasy moreso, which is the main reason anyone continues to play and buy these godawful games.
Doubles is the format that allows for actual interesting strategies though.

After reaching 2000 ELO and Master Ball rank and having played every single difficult romhack and game in existence as a hardcore nuzlocke with 10 different challenges per game, this is what I have concluded:

In games like Elden Ring at launch you'll have a ton of retards running around using the same overpowered shit like Rivers of Blood because it's broken but then it gets nerfed into the ground in a patch

doubles is simply much more interesting to watch, its more dynamic and having multiple pokemon on the field makes synergies and combos feel much more visceral and in general lets utility/support pokemon have their big moments to shine (not that they don't serve a purpose in singles, but a clutch helping hand/follow me/instruct etc. in doubles is just more entertaining to watch than entry hazard clean up duty)

also while both have their issues with stagnant metas and powercreep at times doubles is much, MUCH more hostile to stall and stall is, to be polite, an acquired taste to play with and utterly fucking unwatchable if you do not have autism

They are by far the most beloved battle type among hipsters here and the one that always get the default reaction of "man I LOVE these, why were they cut" for what's a very undercooked gimmicky battle type.

It's funny, I love doubles much more voer singles, but singles does have its place. It's the hyper autistic 6v6 setup/swap war game that it's good for. I actually like 6v6 singles as much as I hate Smogon, but it's a different beast entirely. Setup Pokemon, walls, stalling in general, and entry hazards are only truly functional in this mode. I play VGC, and Glimmora, Dondozo, Ting-Lu/Wo-Chien have been neat additions to the meta and made actual stall viable, something I never thought I'd see, but it's still REALLY tricky to pull off.

doubles is able to handle bullshit a lot more than singles is. two enemies gunning you down at a time, you have to come up with a trick or technique to subdue or wall both at once, often with diverse enemy typings too.

stopped reading right there. If you are saying you reached 2k elo on any showdown ladder, I'm going to need proof. If you're sying you're 2000th on a battlespot ladder, I believe you but not nearly as impressive as it sounds. I made it to 1500th on SwSh Isle of Armor meta VGC, and I'm a shitter.
