You don't need "high level" anatomy down but running around with no skill in anatomy in regards to creatures will mean your skillset is lobsided and overall super limited.
And I don't mean "limited to drawing pokemon" I mean "limited to very specific subjects involving those pokemon". Having an understanding of a general appoximation of what Pokemon are going for allows a greater range of utilization of pokemon.
Relying solely on pokemon will run into a brick wall, as a simplified version of something is hard to parse context from. Even if it is visually pleasing.
Course don't be a retard and fuse real life animal proportions to Pokemon. That always looks pretty disgusting.
