I'm looking to play through gens 1-5 (maybe 6 if it's good) but I don't know which versions are "superior" or if I'll miss out on something big.
Can I get some advice? Thanks

White -> White 2
Legends Arceus (gen 8 but very good)
I recommend Ultra Sun as well because it's a good game, though the cutscenes can get annoying.
Don't play gen 6.

For the ones without a definitive version just play the one with your preferred version exclusives. BW and BW2 are much more effortful with their differences however; just make sure you stick to the same color.

For me it's:

Gen 1: Blue (honestly, just skip this hot mess and play one of the Gen 3 remakes)
Gen 2: Crystal
Gen 3: Emerald + FR
Gen 4: Platinum + SS (HG feels more canon with its emphasis on Ho-Oh, but SS has better version exclusives imo)
Gen 5: W + W2
Gen 6: Omega Ruby

You won't miss anything in most games. Yellow has some anime frills. Ruby and Sapphire have contest halls across the map which are battle halls in Emerald. White has white forest which is vastly superior to black city, but its post game anyway.

just get the version with the mons you like.

Gen 1 (optional): Anything
Gen 2 (optional) Crystal
Gen 3: Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald (depending on your preference) plus FireRed or LeafGreen
Gen 4: JUST PLAY PLATINUM (and HGSS if you like)
Gen 5: Black 1 and Black 2 or White 1 and White 2
Gen 6 (optional): X or Y, then Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire
Gen 7: Ultra Sun or Ultra Moon (they have all the best features and Pokemon). Skip Let's Go Pikachu and Eevee because FireRed and LeafGreen are better.
Don't buy Gen 8 or 9, I don't like the idea of feeding into Nintendo's shit DLC ideas.

Gen I:
Either Red or Blue (Only relevant diff are regional pokemon) and in addition Yellow. Yellow and RB have a few differences in their glitching capabilities (If you are interested in that).

Gen II:
Crystal, it has a battle tower for postgame. Accessability to legendary pokemons is a bit different compared to Gold/ Silver

Gen III:
Emerald, better storyline + Battle Frontier

Gen IV:
HeartGold and Soulsilver are remakes with a completely different region and story than Platinum, Pearl, Diamond. Yet all contain the same pokemon. I would choose Platinum and HG

Gen V:
Can't reallly remember too much

I’d encourage you to try at least one of the gen 1 games before writing them off. There isnt really a right choice for which. I know there are some qol shortcomings but the gameplay flow is pretty quick and they have a style that isnt really present in the remakes. Also gen 2 is MUCH better if you’ve played gen 1 or FRLG, since it’s a direct sequel that references tons of stuff from the first.

Besides that you have a good list. Assuming you only want the mainline games so I wont bother recommending spinoffs.

Honestly just play the upper versions in release order; Firered, Emerald, Platinum, and Heartgold. Then from there move onto Black/White and Black/White 2

6 is pretty bad in a vacuum, but if you were fine with any of the Switch games it's significantly better than those

Going off everybody else I'd say choose the version with the mons that you like and mainly play the games that have story differences like play either Ruby or Sapphire and then play emerald.

Doesn’t matter. You’re choosing the points of the game that fit your narrative even though overall Unova mogs Kalos with routes. If you were to mesh all the routes from both regions together, Unova’s are more complex.
Needing a computer to access a feature doesn't mean the game doesn't have it. By this logic, any wifi feature "isn't in the game" because the game needs another peice of tech for it to run. That eliminates XY's only ace feature (PVP)

You also have a choice in Pokestar. It's painfully obvious you didn't play it. It's not a battle sim. Winning too fast isn't optimal in most cases. You have to win the way that's good for the final result. Also, Pokestar is probably the only minigames that uses the actual battle system. PR videos are literally just modeling with cheap customization options for a ten second video.
