It wasn't even a gimmick when it released, it was THE new step beyond evolution. You would think Gamefreak was planning to add hundreds of Megas for all finished mons, eventually maybe even get rid of the stone once there's enough Megas and allow mons to naturally get there permanently.
Like, once there's 200 Megas or so, Gamefreak could say "fuck it" and let you have a full team of them. That would be the new powercreep

It has nothing to do with age, but the very concept of Pokemon is evolving and suddenly you get a MEGA evolution so it logically fits.
Growing gigantic or shooting special boosted moves look like gimmicks just by reading about it, Gen 6 was more directly connected to the franchise
>They can evolve even further beyond, even if temporary
not to mention it doubled down on the concept of Trainer-Pokemon spiritual link.

Again it nicely fits and felt like something that could have always been part of the franchise.

It's a very anime-shonen thing, to scream and push past your limits to unlock a power-up.
I can't imagine Ash doing weird poses to shoot Z-Moves in the Mewtwo movie or just turning Heracross gigantic to squash Darkrai.
However it easily fit for him to go super saiyan and scream for Charizard to stand up when he's being defeated, evolving into MEGA Charizard to battle Entei or Gary's Blastoise. It fit the tone of what Pokemon was about.

The XY anime actually proves how well integrated Megas were, it was the natural next-step for Pokemon, aiming for higher powerlevels and big shonen moments.
After that they soft-reboot the franchise to make it for toddlers.

No, it was a gimmick and they'd planned to replace it, when they started pre-production on SM. The fact Sugi was now being told to add a further stage of evolution to pokémon he'd long-since accepted as being finalised and compleyte lines, the fact he got artist's block trying to fucking gimmick up Flygon should hacve told you it was fucking finite

Not exactly hard competition; Gigantimax was overly themed at "look stuff is big"(which leads to some super weird designs like the starters) leaving and was barely shilled beyond Pikachu.
Z is literally a single mon(Ultra Necrozma) unless you have autism and count the "forms" of Lunala and Solgaleo.

Whereas megas is just literal digimon design sense, which while tacky a decent chunk of the time has its fans; and sometimes just outright lands.

Anon, the Z-Move gimmick were centred on certain pokémon getting unique, exclusive Z-Moves and not gaining form changes

All I can think of for Marshadow is Kill Bill's 5 point palm exploding heart trick, or whatever the fuck it's called, so I'm likely missing a reference to some earlier OG Jaoanese reference, but the point stands only Marshadow (its strike pattern was the Z-Move logo) and UN (form change when fused with Solgaleo/Lunala) did anything similar to Megas. Which was the whole point of them being different in execution to them in the first place.

So the point stands. The only thing it can throw out to compete is some flashing forms and Ultra Necrozma. Because shitty crystals and dumb dances; did not even sell well at the time.
Mons get fancy looking moves regardless of there being a gimmick. Its the embodiment of really not thinking out if there even is a good appeal point. So in fact Z is a literal nothing gimmick.
Over the top sig moves already existed; Hyperspace Hole was already sorta comparable to a Z Move(except it didn't take ten years).

Its not the focus but the forms are the only thing it really can compete with.

Zs only saving grace is the status side and its still not saving it from being a shit gimmick. Most of the animations were mid to bad, they do not work as a merch gimmick.
They failed, and this is a known fact because SMs merch line is literally incomplete in regards to Z shit.

Also trying to pull me into the megafag sphere just to try to have some amount of leverage. Noticing Zs were a garbage gimmick doesn't mean I like megas either.

Dynamax was better than Megas and Z moves, and arguably better than Tera, but it's still too early to tell. Always having terrain and weather control on a team instead of having to bring dedicated setters opened up teambuilding options.

What benefits did Megas have that Dynamax didn't? Every Pokemon that can Mega can also Dynamax, plus you aren't shut down at the team preview screen. If your Mega had a bad matchup against the other team, your options were either don't bring it, and fight without a Mega against a team with a Mega, or bring it and have it be potentially dead weight. With Dynamax, you could always find something to max.

No it didn’t it just robbed weather/terrain setters (most of which are otherwise weak Pokémon) of their niche
