The 3DS games were always shit, Gen 5 is a step down from 3 and 4 in terms of long-term play experience, but its still multiple steps above every pokemon game that has released since.
Nobody has EVER said the 3DS games weren't bad here, that's weird apologist nonsense that started over the past year as people got nostalgic for XY (which was almost a decade ago now), and the new games just getting messier and shittier.
Series was good to passable for 16 years, and has now been shit for almost 10 years. So it technically hasn't been bad longer than it's been good, but at this point it sure feels like it has.
