because unlike megashit the GMAX forms actually have a coherent way to enhance a pokemon instead of just slapping ugly spikes and called it a day

Mega Evolution has some real stinkers like Glailie and Sharpedo, which in retrospect really only existed to give the Hoenn E4 something to mega evolve I guess, but on average I'd say Gmax is way worse / much less interesting from a design perspective, looking at them all I think only G Machamp and G Lapras are worth anything..
