You learn that Mr. Fuji was a scientist along with Blaine in the Cinnabar Lab by looking at a picture, and you have the scientists who were cloning Mewtwo in the nearby Pokémon Mansion.
But of course the games eventually tried to be closer to the anime, which is why Let's Go has pods in Cinnabar Mansion and Giovanni catches Mewtwo.
