I’ve always been of the opinion that post games should consist of a new base area with battle facilities and places to spend BP on items and TMs, and maybe even some mini games, yknow like somewhere to spend most of your time when you revisit the game, and then some surrounding areas to explore, ideally with new mons.

I know RS had almost no postgame, but that's not fair. There's also Sky Pillar and, while it's technically not post-game, the Regi Puzzles as well since at the time of release most people wouldn't know about the Regis until well after they've beaten the Elite Four and started exploring the water routes. Even if it was just Sky Pillar and no Battle Tower or Regi Puzzles, that would still be more than RBY's postgame since the floor puzzles in Sky Pillar make it a more difficult dungeon than Cerulean Cave. And anyway, most of the flaws in RS like no postgame (Emerald has an entire Battle Frontier), no animated sprites, no way to reset EVs, no Ditto for breeding, etc. were rectifed in Emerald. Basically everything except no day-night cycle.

Gen I had amazing postgame as well:

- Capturing Mewtwo
- Executing the Mew Glitch
- Exploring the different MissingNo and their properties
- Investigating different Glitch cities
- Investigating out of bounds
- Having fun with memory corruption
- Having fun with arbitrary code execution
- Fighting glitch trainers

It has the most comprehensive unintended postgame, still not finished with it : )

Except the Battle Palace, but that's more an execution problem than a conceptual one, I think. If more information was available about how it worked (or if it was less complex) then I think it would have been fine.

I loved the small differences in the Arena and Dome, though. Sure, they weren't hugely different from the Tower in terms of mechanics, but they helped keep the gameplay diverse enough that it was fun to keep switching to different facilities. I'd miss them both sorely if they weren't there.

Things like Heatran's "episode", Looker in almost all the games he appears, legendaries from previous regions, delta episode, Episode RR, and many similar things to do, NONE OF WHICH would make remote sense to happen before the credits. Just pretend the credits don't exist anon.
Also, how can you simultaneously hold the following two beliefs:

But postgame content shouldn't exist period because all of it is pointless and barely anyone would care to replay or see it. If there's a loose end that can't be tied up until the credits roll, you should rework your game to put it beforehand.

Sure. I just don't know why this content and the games it comes from are praised so highly because it was arbitrarily cordoned off until you see the dev's name. Shitnova isn't a better game because I can go to le heckin 1/5th of the map that could and should have been traversed beforehand after I beat Ghetsis.

Having an unlockable game mode with everything tied to the main story game would weigh it down with constraints. A good reward for beating the game could have things tangential to the main story like short chapters where you play different characters with their Pokemon with hidden lore for the people that are actually interested. The ideal postgame at bare minimum would be
-Rematching Gym Leaders and Elite Four that have extra cranked up mons with better movesets and even IV/EV stuff added in (mind you, it should NEVER be all IV's set to 32, just above the default is enough) so rematching the Elite Four and Champion would be a bigger challenge
-This could also extend to NPC trainers
-Post-game legendaries should have an elaborate puzzle or a hard maze like Cerulean cave that also doubles as a training zone to get your mons leveled up fast
-A way to replicate the secret base trade feature from RSE so you can battle in-game vs an NPC that uses a friend's team
-Allow EXP gain for battle tower, this place is basically the only thing in modern pokemon games where you can find shit at super high levels. It can ease the time it takes to make something Lv100
-Postgame-only NPCs that can trade you mons that evolve via trading

Everything else like battle frontiers or extra regions is just lip service for DLC's, by default the above should be a thing because the thing pokemon lacks is challenge and it'd be nice to have something that ressembles new game+ because i'm sure gamefreak isn't bringing back Challenge Mode again.

yes so the main game is just that short, your point being? they could make a pokemon game whose main campaign is a 70 hour main story adventure so by your logic that’d mean no pokemon game has postgame if there’s less than 70 hours of content to do.
it being shorter than other pokemon games is irrelevant

kanto was considered postgame for years, having an entire other region after the credits was touted as a big selling point of GSC/HGSS.
it's only once people started criticizing Johto for being, like you said, half the size/length of other games, that its supporters shifted the narrative to kanto being part of the story.

Mechanically speaking, 'postgame content' is no different from gating off Ecruteak until you have the Plain Badge or the old man blocking the way to Viridian Forest—arbitrary as it is, it's just how Game Freak makes sure the player's scope never extends into something their team shouldn't be equipped to handle (we could discuss whether or not that's a good idea, but that would be a 'should the player be allowed to fight level 50+ wild mons from the get go' question, not a 'is postgame content good' question). Some postgame features, particularly minigames, probably should be available earlier on (or should just have more gates interspersed throughout them), but setting aside certain parts of the game for people dedicated enough to complete the game and come back for more is an elegant way to leave casual and serious fans feeling like they've had the 'full' Pokémon experience even when the former only engaged with a portion of the entire package. Besides just extra challenge, this also allows Game Freak to insert nonessential (but fan-pleasing) segments like the Cynthia cameo, Delta Episode and Rainbow Rocket subplot into the game without interrupting the flow of the main campaign.

For me, I tend to view the postgame as the 'second season' of the game's narrative (both the one presented by the game's text and visuals and the one the player creates for themself via their gameplay choices). Now that we've proven ourselves as champion of the region and fended off the antagonists, we're free to pursue greater—and often more personal—goals, be it by exploring the remainder of the game's world and catching newly-available Pokémon, battling the game's toughest opponents, or just tying up any remaining plot threads (something that no narrative is ever truly free from—games just give us the opportunity to rectify them at our own leisure). Old areas take on new dimensions, and our focus shifts from forming our team to exploring the limits of its potential. Depending on the postgame, this all results in raised (for ORAS or USUM) or lowered (for the rest of them) narrative stakes, but either option gives the game's extended epilogue a new 'feel' without losing the mechanics that made our initial impressions appealing, and this sort of contrast can only emerge with the aid of a delimiting narrative device like a credits sequence. The tonal shift often extends to gameplay as well, as both GSC, DPPt and Gen V's postgames add a hint of openness to what was a predominantly-linear adventure. (Much of this is, admittedly, pure sentimentality on my part, but it's a sentimentality shared by many other players. Feel free to ignore this post if aesthetics aren't an important part of your game evaluations.)

tl;dr: postgame content isn't always inherently good, but the gameplay and aesthetic features it adds to a Pokémon game are unique to its status as postgame content and should be appreciated in their own right.

On another note, I'm a big fan of the music the games use to introduce their postgame areas. The S.S. Aqua's overeager anticipation leading into a delightfully schmaltzy Vermillion City rearrangement, the Sevii Islands' comforting rendition of Azalea Town's theme, the 80's-montage 'look what I can do now!' sound of Route 225, the emotionally-anthemic theme for Route 11 (and my absolute favorite track from the series: Village Bridge)—all of them do a fantastic job conveying the sense of a new, greater journey a postgame section should have without ever repeating another game's ideas.

As much as I enjoy a well-executed postgame, a mini-region, some important trainer rematches, and a few extra legendary sidequests is really all I need to feel satisfied with one. I'd give up several of my vital organs to see another title try to pull a GSC, but I'd be lying if I thought Game Freak would ever be up the task in the 21st century.

This is all I need. You can add a two gauntlets, one with rental teams and one where you can use your own team. Also make it all available since the midgame and have it progress and reward you like the trick house because locking stuff after the credits is dumb and gay.
