You want to save before even popping the egg sandwich so you don't lose the herba, you just save, make the sandwich, picnic and fill the boxes and then go to town on hatching.
Maybe you connected online, went on a raid, did something that required a save or just auto piloted and saved.
Maybe you didn't actually turned off auto saving.
