I'm thinking they're going to be Grass/Fairy Types.
Dipping into some of the purposed symbolism of the game being fertility, war, day/night & life vs death. Fairy type is a good stand in for magic.
I like to think that the middle evolution has a big leafy tail it wraps around its waist for padding when playing ball, and has a stone dog-color that resembles the hoops-goals.
