Not necessarily, Pidgeot has the benefit of being bulkier and at least Spearow is available significantly earlier than Doduo. Granbull is literally JUST a worse Ursaring. The only tangible advantage it has is it’s earlier evo level but that’s barely an advantage desu, especially when Teddiursa is also an objectively better Snubull and is available earlier

Yeah, but not to this extent.
Granbull was virtually identical to Ursaring, just slightly worse.
Fortunately future games set them apart, as soon as gen 3 with abilities, but I have no idea what Game Freak was thinking back in GS with this.

not in crystal. teddiursa can be found at level 2 in the dark cave. granted, it's only found in morning, has a 5% encounter rate, and can run away. in GS, snubbull is only found in route 38 with a 1% encounter rate unless there's a swarm. you can find miltank and tauros in the same route.

The intent behind it and the Sandslash Marowak example ITT was an old philosophy where they'd make a version exclusive mon that was better than the mon available in both versions. The idea is that you still have SOMEthing, and not nothing from lacking the version exclusive.

Swarms in Gen 2 don't work the way they do in later games, you just talk to a specific NPC and then the encounter rate goes to 50% for the rest of the day

Marowak did have a insane movepool in gen 1 even with the shit sp stat it could do some surprise damage.
Made it fun to use in game.

I'm using both in my current Crystal mono-Normal playthrough. Granbull evos at an earlier levels and is far easier to catch, though teddiursa is no trouble if you simply catch ghastly and level it until it gets mean look (+ hypnosis).

Granbull can learn Shadow Ball, Ursaring cannot.

Becoming a Fairy I thought would save this thing because it's actually pretty unique for a Fairy: it has Intimidate, it's a physical attacker, it has access to moves like Bulk Up... Still boggles my mind that they didn't revisit it with an evolution/stat buff/movepool during SWSH for the literal British region but Game Freak is a bunch of hacks so whatever

At this point just give it an evolution, Fairy/Fighting, Dark or Steel. The secondary type would solidify its desire to be a bulky physical mon, and the BST buff would help more than any small stat buff could (BST is 450 currently, so if we pull an Ursaluna it would gain 50 points going from 2nd to 3rd stage or better yet it gains a full 100 to match Ursaluna's 550). Replace Quick Feet and Rattled with Guts and Strong Jaw, and now you're in business. It has a good movepool already. Maybe give it access to Jaw Lock and Spirit Break, then make sure it can get some of its "lost" moves back -- it had access to Wild Charge, Low Kick, Rock Slide, Superpower and Super Fang in USUM but they were lost going into BDSP.

Game Freak didn't stop the brutal mogging until Gen 6, and that's mainly because they cut the Pokedex size in half and only included a handful of filler-mons.

I'd say they're decently matched, Tank is more defensive and recovery but Ursaring tears through everything with its 130 attack.
Miltank's main advantage is being easily obtainable in all versions
