In order to catch them all in Gen 1-2 you just needed a copy of the version you didn't own and another game boy, or just a friend.
In Gen 3, you needed to have Ruby, Emerald, Sapphire, both remakes, Colosseum, Gale of Dakrness, Channel too (if you wanted legit Jirachi). Last three games needed a Gamecube, and you also had to use the GBA adaptor to connect the gba games with the gc ones.
