That's the thing, though. A regional variation won't save the original, it'll only damn it into irrelevancy while everyone focuses solely on the objectively superior variation.

He was going to get a mega, but Sugimori said he had artists' block. I don't get it though. It's not like Mega Pokemon designs are difficult to make. Mega Sharpedo and Mega Aerodactyl are just the same Pokemon covered all over in "le edgy spikes."

There's more artists employed by Game Freak than just Sugimori. Why didn't they just have someone else design it instead?

It wasn't Sugimori specifically. The design team was tossing around the idea for a Mega Flygon as far back as XY, but ultimately couldn't come up with anything they liked.

Not that it matters in the long run, Mega Evolution's never coming back to mainline Pokemon until Kalos remakes and then it'll be gone again for another 20-30 years.
