The gen 1 games were designed as a creature collector. Being able to battle with friends was an afterthought, and it shows. There's no way GF designed Tauros with the intent of it being the most dominant mon outside of Mewtwo and Mew, but that's just how things worked out.
Psychic types being so OP, Ghost and Dragon types being so rare, Poison types being so common, many Pokemon not even getting STAB moves, physical mons having special types and vice versa, some Pokemon being rare and hard to get despite being so weak, some mons just being literal animals while others are abstract etc.
It's all weird, but that makes it feel "natural" in a way. And I think that makes the creature collector element more effective.
