more on fashion and clothing affects protagonists. Starting from the protagonists (and sometimes, rivals).
tldr, you are what you wear.
Generally, Their fashion is intentionally designed to be casual yet jack of all trades, perfectly strikes balance between:
>trendy yet sporty enough.
>comfy yet also durable.
>multipurpose for casual, everyday, formal, outdoor.
>appears like urban fashion clothing yet easily survive off-grid exploration in wilderness.
While clothing design is intended to be fictional, it also inspired to strike balance of appearing unique yet still generic enough in public (even IRL standards). Also instead of designing eccentric clothing for protagonists to differentiate them from NPCs, Protagonists wear various accessories (jackets/vests, gloves, scarfs, and most importantly: hats). Cosplaying as Pokémon trainer isn't as complicated as other anime/manga/game characters since all materials are easily accessible at your local apparel store instead of custom sewing (well, except hats, probably)
Specific regions
>Kanto
"plain and simple": Kanto being sort of "template, placeholder" region compared to sequels. Red, Leaf wear mono-color clothing with plain accessories.
>Johto
Compared to Kanto, Johto protags design appears to be more eccentric and sporty. Gold/Ethan appears more cooler and delinquent with his hat style backward. Same with Kris (she runs a lot). Lyra is kinda off with her unusual hat design though, she appears to be less active than Kris.
