That's because they make the most sense. Z-moves animation would be too much work and too minor an introduction to warrant their inclusion and while Terastal adds more complexity to the gameplay than Megas do, it's not as appealing to the average player. The only other gimmick I can imagine being incorporated into side games and other media would be Gigantamax forms but even those models would be more difficult to add than Megas.

To add to this, it's interesting how each gimmick corresponds with tweaking a different aspect of gameplay. Gen 5 tweaked the abilities (Hidden Abilities). Gen 6 tweaked the stats (Megas), Gen 7 tweaked the moves (Z-moves), Gen 8 tweaked the size (GMax in SwSh, Alpha forms in PLA), and Gen 9 tweaked the typings. What other aspect can they change at this point? Status conditions (burn, paralysis, etc.)? Entry hazards? Priority moves? None of those are as innate as typing or stats.

DW Abilities weren't a gimmick, if anything Gems fit closer the bill (still not a gimmick in presentation or anything else). Also you wouldn't have access to them because almost all of them were locked to DW website.

The fact that they're treated separately from normal abilities (e.g. Ability Capsules can't change a Pokemon's ability to or from a Hidden Ability while Ability Patches can only change a Pokemon's ability to its Hidden Ability and not the other way around) and the fact that Hidden Abilities are usually better than the regular abilities makes them a gimmick in my book.

Mega stones were just an unintentional byproduct of the ancient weapon, it's not really far-fetched that two of the stones just happened to be able to resonate with Mewtwo's cells.

Z-Moves were a fucking mistake. They should've just stuck to Mega Evolutions.
That's how we ended up with Dynamax. Mechanically, it's far more balanced than Megas.
Developmentally, it's far cheaper than Megas.

Gacha games needs constant material to pump out. Since the guy in charge of Unite is also the guy who was in charge of Pokken and commissioned Shadow Mewtwo, it wouldn't suprise me if they'll also had shadow pokemon to the mix, just like GO did. They already have G-Max after all.
