It may not look pretty, but it's appearance actually IS grounded in reality. It's based on an extinct species of amphibian called a 'Diplocaulus' - the 'extinct' part being the reason it's part ghost. Funny how nature works some times - it came up with the 'flying wing' design long before humans did, though in this case it was to make Diplocaulus hydrodynamic rather than aerodynamic.

Gengar's ability to switch into powerful normal and fighting moves that were difficult to switch into (gen 1 body slam/hyper beam/slash, gen 1-4 self-destruct/explosion, gen 2 and 4 dynamic punch, and gen 4-5 boosted close combats) and later gain flawless coverage with only two moves beginning with gen 4 was proof that ghost was one of the best types in the series.
