Hey /vp/, /biz/ curryslinger here.

I just watched mewtwo strikes back for the first time since I was a kid. I was shocked at how genuinely enjoyable and visually striking the movie was. I've tried watching a few of the first episodes again, and although they seem to repeat the formula episode to episode, they were still definitely comfy. I tried watching a modern episode and it just felt off (animation weird, no quality or soul).

Am I just watching this through rose tinted glasses? Is there anything modern that's comparable to the old days that I can look forward to once I've finished watching all the nostalgia?

I never really watched the anime as a kid, so by the time I watched some of season 1 as an adult, I thought it was fairly boring. Young kid stuff.
You might enjoy 90's anime in general, maybe some 00's stuff too

Nah, the old stuff is genuinely better. It's the case for the series in many ways. Doesn't help how low effort the dub is, I really wouldn't bother with modern Pokemon dubbed, much less at all.

The original guy in charge of the show’s direction held the reigns up to and including Pokemon 2000, if I remember right. I remember some people on this board who seemed to know more about behind the scenes production than me talking about how the show changed after that because he got either replaced or died or was just broken in by new mandates.

Apparently he wanted Ash to grow up with the audience but producers said he had to stay 10 forever. It’s a shame because I feel like that could’ve been something really special. I remember that example being talked about specifically.

I dont watch the modern stuff. I definitely prefer the original look of the show but that probably is largely nostalgia bias. Digital animation doesnt scratch the same itch that traditional does for old people like us.

Not modern but I liked the third movie and I’ve heard the one with Latias is good, and what few clips I’ve seen seem to confirm that.

If you want that comfy feeling of a group of friends journeying together, it’s something every other fictional work tries to do that very few actually succeed at.

Probably a lot of it has to do with the animation and art style of anime in general at the time. I also have the same question as you OP, is it simply nostalgia or is there an actual defined explanation as to why episodes from Pokémon's original series is more enjoyable compared to later series? Was there passion and care to the anime's earliest seasons that later disappeared after the anime became a perpetual commercial for the rest of the franchise?
To me, even a boring Johto filler episode still has something nice to look at. Advanced Generation maintains some charm, but Diamond and Pearl onwards comes off as too sterile.

Thanks anon, this is the answer I was looking for although not surprised. This movie really did feel special, almost like a Ghibli. Maybe they return to their roots one day. Doubtful of course as they will likely continue the desecration of their best work for cash (just saw netflix did a remake of mewtwo strikes back lmao cursed).

I don't know how to explain it, but whenever I see this image, all I feel is a mix of emptiness and disgust. In fact, it's not even the only scene in that special that evokes such emotions. The scene that shows four Hisuian Pokémon lunging out towards the camera (5 seconds in the trailer), why does that come off as creepy? Does it make any sense in context?

that movie is extremely kino, nostalgia or not. the difference in quality between the movie and the series is obviously pretty vast, i recently rewatched the first 2 seasons because they have them on the pokémon tv website for free, and it was enjoyable for sure. the new shows art style is horrendous, i can't get behind it at all.

The art is one aspect, but the sterility, such as it is, started when Pokemon became a worldwide phenomenon. They had to start considering what plays safe to kids (and their parents) all over the globe, and not just Japan, which takes away a lot of the unique Japanese identity the original show had. At the same time, the Pokemon universe itself became more strictly defined and certain concepts you just aren't allowed to play with anymore (OS had some of the weirdest episodes like a giant Dragonite roaming around just because it made the world feel more mysterious for some random cartoon episode about monster battling).

Pokemon was always a corporate product from day one so I'm not saying the original show concepts were some auteur masterpieces or some shit, but there's a reason why the most famous banned/censored episodes of Pokemon are from the original series (barring some unfortunate coincidences like ADV having a Whiscash episode the same time earthquakes happened in real life). There's degrees to this stuff.

Disingenous to compare still shots. Sun and Moon has way more actual animation than the prior anime series and overall is one of the most "animated" anime of all time (especially accounting for how many episodes it has).

As mentioned the cel animation (which lasts until very late into Johto), Shudo's peculiarities showing up in those first 3 movies and his TV episodes, and the brand being in its wild west period before being ground down for a known international audience do make the early show a little different. You can take what most affects you or what ties in to your favorite era of Pokemon and just leave the rest, that is really how the show is built. That said I've found the movies are pretty consistently comfy, and you do not need to have watched a given section of the show to enjoy them, they're all standalone. Often derivative yes, but a concise and nice-looking go round with Ash tends be pleasant on its worst days.

The construction of a box vs. those only allowed to construct within that box.
It's not just style differences - the modern anime often has a sloppy drawing quality to it like the people behind it don't care. But the old stuff looks like drawings that geeks with pens were happily poring over.

There are many modern digital anime that look awesome because they were initially made within that medium. Their soul was formed in that vision. But trying to imitate something old and authentic in something it wasn't made for will always feel like a poor shadow..

Early Pokemon was special. Not just Shudo's writing, everything was conceptualized differently. The setting was more science fiction than fantasy. Pokemon were treated like scifi monsters instead of 1-to-1 replacements for animals. Legendaries were Darwinian instead of pseudoreligious. The world was a vaguely post-apocalyptic version of our world instead of a utopian planet full of regions that coincidentally look like theme park versions of real world countries.

whats funny is that when the movie came out, critics shitted on the movie's animation and said it was poor. some of it was just bad taste and some of it was backlash against the popularity of Pokemon at the time the movie came out.

Honestly, Pokemon was one of the few anime 4kids touched that was honestly better than the dub we're getting now. The earlier seasons felt like they had more character to them, compared to what we're getting now. Sure there are some gems from the post 4kids seasons, but they honestly gave the dub some charm.
And besides they'd later give us Texan Dedede. If it wasn't for their One Piece, I'd unironically look back on them as a whole with nostalgia.

My brother in christ. This shares the title of my favorite animated movie (alongside B&B Do America). Perfectly paced, action sequences are kino, soundtrack is one of the most soulful things out there.

S1-3 as a whole were a sight to see

This is very true. Ash was a constant until very recently, but other than the rare one episode guest appearance from an old character each region/season is its own self contained thing.

Honestly they were a perfect fit for shows like Kirby and Pokemon. They just had a bad reputation for how they handled stuff like One Piece and Naruto, where they tried to gear the shows to very young kids when they were really intended for a slightly older demographic.
