What's strange about Munchlax is not the ridiculous requirements to find it, but how the only trainer to use Munchlax (aside from a lone collector in the Route 210 Cafe who is also Platinum exclusive) is your ADHD spastic rival, who brings a level 40 one to the multi-battle on Spear Pillar. It's also strange how he has a Heracross, a 5% honey tree encounter, probably a joke by the devs

It's called subtle character development, something GF has forgotten how to do. The entire game, Barry is running around crashing into you and acting before thinking, his team is even common encounters. As the journey goes on he gets Herecross and Munchlax, both of which which require patience to obtain, and the latter only after a crushing defeat against Jupiter at Lake Acuity.

It was like a lil green gluttonous teddy bear, a novel idea at the time since we never had a teddy bear pokemon until Stufful. But the real reason was to expand on the lore of Snorlax by giving it an evolutionary relative; since Snorlax has always been a fan favorite, it was thought a fun size version would have a widespread appeal.

Interesting theory but I'm not very sure about that. Does barry ever have dialogue about becoming a more thoughtful person? His impatience is just a character trait, not necessarily a bad thing unlike silver's attitude. I think they give him munchlax and heracross because you need to "see" every pokemon in the sinnoh dex to progress to postgame, and the DP dex is so sparse that there aren't many other options to give him to make him have a challenging team of 6, that other prominent trainers don't already use.

They took Snorlax and removed the one thing everyone loves about him, being a huge lazy fatass
Munchlax has less identity than maybe any pokemon design ever. Its like someone just drew a generic blue circle and threw ears and eyes on it.

They should have made him easier to catch, in fact it's insane to me that they bothered to make all these baby forms for existing pokemon but made them pointlessly rare, when it feels like the whole point should be that you can catch them relatively early and train them up yourself
