Take the dex pill. Catch, raise and evolve Pokémon as you go and have a rotating team. This I great for a few reasons. Immersive role playing, reduces post-game tedium of returning to low level areas to catch mons, give every Pokémon their chance instead of 6 per playthrough. This is more tedious pre forced Exp. Share but for any title that has it it's very doable with very little grinding if any and the game becomes harder by spreading xp across more Pokémon.

this. I played Violet with 2 teams and enjoyed getting my ass kicked by Arven’s team but barely managing to beat him with my underleveled team. and got to check out and evolve more of the new pokemon

I should mention I spent the entire game underleveled (I got my pokedex up to over 160, my new personal best) but finished the Road Home storyline just using type advantages.

Shootouts to the zigzagoons that gave me enough rare candies and then some to bump shroomish up the last 11 levels it needed to learn Spore, made things a lot easier.
Hardest fights were Watson when I only had shroomish and roselia, Flannery with no water moves, Winona for obvious reasons, the twins for having flamethrower on solrock, and ironically Glacia's glalies, which have never troubled me in the past.
Also shoutout to Cradily getting fucking Ancient Power at level 48. And my man Blackblet Nob who let me steal a Black Belt of my own.

How did Sableye hold up in Emerald? I'm thinking about using one because I love its design and it has a ton of neat little attributes, but its stats are ass I doubt it'll be worth it in the long run.

It was extremely good and carried early game, falls off around Norman or so and is almost dead weight by the late game. Loved the little guy though. But tbf Aggron and Exploud were bigger dead weights than Sableye that run.

6 badges, still missing Sneasel and Skarmory. I raised Sunkern to 31 for Synthesis, which was mayhaps more effort than necessary. Overall, the team is pretty decent. Never used Donphan before, it's holding up much better than I thought it would, considering it only learns moves via TM.

Yes. Dark/Ice are BOTH special type in gen3, so Sneasel literally has no real stab option for the game with those terrible defences as well.

I just beat Lance in Crystal. I really enjoyed this squad. It only took me two days to get the shiny Suicune but I noticed my luck ended up being pretty shit during the E4 (some highlights I remember were five Paralyzed turns in a row, five Sleep turns in a row, and three Rock Slide misses in a row) so I guess it balances out. Scizor ended up being the weak link by a long shot. I have no idea how that thing is UUBL other than so many people assuming it does the same stuff as it does now, especially with the BP ban. On the other hand Golem was easily the MVP. I was expecting people to be over-reacting when they said Golem was OP in Johto but I can now safely say they are correct. Near the end I traded it to a Yellow cart to teach it Rock Slide which made things very funny. I’m planning to complete Kanto and Stadium 2, and then I’ll try to send at least Suicune to the modern games.

It’s not as bad as people say but it’s still a pain. From my experience everyone being at Level 40 is enough to take down the Elite Four and when I reached them my lowest level Pokemon was at 35. It usually takes an hour or two but that’s all the grinding I ever do in the game.
