Reading this thread made me realize the difference between old and new generational gimmicks is how tied to the main game it is.
Gen 3 redid how stats work and added abilities. Contests were a big side thing that didnt really last, and that was what people considered a gimmick back then.
Gen 4 changed how physical/special work. Big side thing was the underground, but as a side thing it wasn't that big of a deal that it wasn't carried into the next gen (some people definitely did miss it though).
Gen 5 had triples/rotation, and while that tied in more to the core game than the previous ones it was still fundamentally a side feature that didn't change the singles/doubles core.
Megas, z moves, dynamax and tera all become the centralizing element of the core game and then get thrown out.

That doesn't excuse it design-wise, but if you just want to play then the option is there.
