That's the in-universe explanation, it doesn't make sense from a storytelling perspective to go out of their way to make the book the key, unless the book itself has something that makes the machine work, aka the designs. It's the same for most paradox mons, why go out of their way to say volcarona fossils were never found? We didn't need this information, if it was actually time travel they would have no reason to tell us this, but they did, why? Because it's not time travel. Talking about fossils, all fossils have accurate timeframes in their pokedex entries equivalent to their real world counterparts, all except the supposed ancient jigglypuff that says a billion years ago. And talking about dex entries, if the paradox mons are real, why they don't have dex entries? Even the UBs have them, because they are real, just from a different dimension.
Just simply the fact that the first paradox the professors brought were koraidon/miraidon when their hero, Heath, had a cyclizar, already raises tons of red flags.
