>>54047897>Why would I want to use Blaine’s Charizard when I have my own Charizard?lol, I had the exact same feeling as a kid. I never cared about the trainers and only cared about the pokemon. The pokemon on the cards felt less like "mine."
I didn't hate the sets or the cards and went after a few of them, but they didn't feel as cool to me as just the straight up pokemon. Looking back now I think they're cool. Though I do wish that the little badge on the bottom right of the cards was also holofoil, would have really made the set stand out.
>>54047650>>54047540Trying to remember back myself, the hype for me and my friends was mostly around the games, followed by the anime and the pokemon themselves. There was still hype for the cards, but not at the same level. Neo Genesis was the first place that many kids did see the new pokemon for the first time, especially if you didn't have a copy of gold or silver or didn't do all the trade evolutions.
I have a "Johto Guidebook" still at home, and after skimming through it I realized they didn't even show all the new pokemon, lmao. They left out dozens just to keep kids in the dark.
Anyways, I do remember more kids talking about and trading for neo discovery and revelation cards. I think on the whole they just put cooler and more charismatic pokemon in those sets that kids would gravitate towards.
