I'm mainly a player of Anything Goes (or various old VGC formats) and I can say with confidence that until Generation 8 there was nothing too overcentralizing. Heck I even find Garchomp more useful than Dialga/Palkia at times.

There are a few Pokemon in Generation 8 that I feel are broken but somewhat more balanced in Generation 8/9 National Dex AG:
* Zacian
* Calyrex (Shadow)
* Regieleki
* Urshifu
* Ting-Lu

But I actually have a bigger problem with Pokemon that are not strong enough being nerfed, best examples being Talonflame, Aegislash, Mimikyu, etc.

The developers totally balance the game by adding tutor moves and adjusting abilities and movesets. There has been nothing that deserves to be baned in SV. Every pokemon you bans removes a check from a different potentially broken mon.

Battle calc are bullshit because they create hypothetical game states which don't occur in an actual battle. The calcs have the opposing side at a disadvantage where they let you gain a huge advantage with hazards and setup. You can't tell me a situation where the opposing side has hazards on their side, no other fast strong pokemon of their own, and your side having elevated stats and screens is a scenario which actually occurs where the opponent didn't THROW the game in which case they deserve to have lost.

Fucking this. So many games nowadays only make balance changes based on one of these format when both tend to be pretty popular in their own right in those games. Even games like Pokémon GO make balance changes regularly (because Niantic is hyper-focused on their competitive brackets being taken seriously, y’know, for a phone game) by making buffs or nerfs that usually put tournaments as a primary focus with ladder formats (aka the only way to play from your hometown) secondary, which usually results in some open formats being unplayable for at least months, sometimes over a year.

I've been saying this for years and nobody's been listening. The fundamental problem Smogon has, and this is an irreconcilable problem without splitting the formats, is that ladder play and tournament play are different.
Yes, the rules per individual battle are the same, but the goal is different and that means that ladder play favors winning more than losing, and tournament play favors low risk gameplay because losing period isn't an option.
That's why bans like the Matchup Moth are so baffling to most players. Ladder players lose to Volcarona and move on with their day. Tourney players lose to Volcarona, get eliminated, and cry themselves to sleep.

Like with the 6 pokemon limit you can have on your team, a mon can only have 4 moves. Perfect coverage against all pokemon counters is impossible because you are giving up an offensive or setup move when you do. This make you weaker and unable a counter brought in. Rayquaza is strong with its good hp amd def but is taken out by a strong move of a type its weak against.

As much as I hate Scald the chance to burn (which is a minor setback to everything that isn’t a physical attacker or something like Ting-Lu) is not remotely comparable to the chance of going first. If you actually played the game, you’d know going first is always a huge deal.

Because OP is a fucking retard, what people are doing is having 5 Quick Claws with 5 Trick Room sweepers and then add Grimmsnarl because Screens + Parting Shot is nearly busted. All these Pokemon have bulk and more than enough fire power to where going first makes or breaks a game, and they have more than enough chances to go first multiple times per game.

Most of the time it didn't matter because everyone is always switching around anyway. The opportunities for a Quick Claw to matter, nevermind activate, were few and far in-between. It mattered in maybe like 1in 10 games.
The reason the monoclaw team got as far as it did is because it's a well constructed bulky offense team composed of Pokemon that could afford to play without an item.

1. Ladder determines almost everything about Smogon tiering. Usage stats, suspect tests, and 90% of discussion on threads
2. Most of the bans of Gen 9 are quick bans.
3. Players have been ban happy recently for good reason. Gen 9 decided to bring in a bunch of shit that’s blatantly broken. Yeah Quick Claw existed in previous gens, but Gen 9 introduced a few borderline broken Pokemon too held back by their Speed and gave us Parting Shot Grimmsnarl and Gholdengo. So only now are people realizing that maybe a random 20% chance to move first is in fact not competitive
4. Tour players are responsible for worst decisions Smogon makes. Did you just forget the Pokemon they banned to appease Tourfags? They did this recently with Volcarona being quick banned and everyone (and I bet you too) are pissed about. Don’t forget how King’s Rock was banned too, or Kyurem.
5. This faggot is just gonna delete that post once someone brings a Quick Claw team to a tournament game and makes someone lose. Would be funny karma if he so happened to lose to said Quick Claw team too.
6. Competitive Pokemon should always focus on being competitive. Frankly both King’s Rock and Quick Claw should have been banned from the start. The sole reason why people are even defending Quick Claw solely has to do with “It was like this before!”. If Quick Claw and King’s Rock had been banned beforehand, none of you guys would be asking for it to be unbanned.

It also happens when your opponent has a bulky attacker that you can't KO but can KO your mon back.
Which is what happens with the monoclaw team, you switch in your Kingambit or your Ursaluna on a resisted hit and the opponent has to switch out because they lose the 1v1. That's how a bulky offense team is played, by design it doesn't rely on speed control. The Quick Claws hardly mattered, in most games they won't activate because they'll barely even get the chance to.
The guy who built the team made a pretty good yet handicapped bulky offense team and told everyone he was winning thanks to Quick Claw rather than in spite of it, and everyone fell for the meme.

I don't really care to say beyond a general feeling, the point is that smogon in general has a much more heavy handed group handling everything.
And said group really wants to show "hey we're doing something" and make an impact. For a bit this was only older formats but has leaked over by this stage.
But that still means that older formats are an origin point. Smogon is very much getting more and more off their own fumes.

The ideal of "Pokemon Chess" is pushed quite a bit if you glance around their forums, which is absurd on multiple levels.
Smogon has been corrupt for ages of course, I recall it being around in 2009 or whenever I actually used the forums(I think it was around the point OHKO moves were just banned?).
The community was already a tad incestious at that point. Its not exactly shocking that they're somewhat delusional at this stage.
Its a confused viewpoint at best, trying to pretend certain aspects born from the same branch are different from these "bad" things; and that the purpose of smogon is purely for some final destination fox only shit.except fox is game and watch or something I suppose
Which is an insanely niche product; if you unironically think the thing that top wants even slightly lines up with the general playerbase you are clearly missing obvious context.

Except no player is going to keep their Pokemon in if they expect a KO-worthy super effective move. Monoclaw is only effective if you play it like any old bulky offense team and don't take unnecessary risks by relying on Quick Claw all the time.

This is where Quick Claw actually matters, in the late game when most of both teams are down. But this means most of the time Quick Claw will have one or two interactions where it can do something, 20% of the time.
The guy who made the team himself said that QC will usually activate maybe once a game and matter even less than that.
You have a better chance of losing a game to a flinch or a miss than a quick claw, even when five Pokemon are carrying it.

This is obvious bait but in case anyone here is stupid enough to actually believe what this guys saying: Having your pokemon get randomly burnt is obviously not as impactful as having your pokemon randomly get knocked out.
Personally I don't think the strat is overpowered, its just incredibly frustrating to play against. pretending its comparable to Scald is fucking retarded though.

Also, Stall is, whether you like it or not, is a much easier play style to balance than hyper offence because it requires more turns to win. This means both players are given more time to gather information and mount your counter play. A lot of the time in incredibly offence focused metas you're forced to essentially guess what your opponent's strategy is with little prior information: Pokemon is essentially turned into a game of "Ultimate Rock-Paper-Scissors"

Look at Dragapult. It’s one of the best Pokemon in the game and it’s solely because it’s fast and has managable offenses/defenses. You could use Iron Valiant, Roaring Moon, Dragonite, Gengar, Hydreigon, Regidrago, etc. over Dragapult, all of which have better offenses statwise+movepool wise and at least on par bulk to Dragapult. Yet despite all that, Dragapult is on 1/3rd of all fucking teams, and in the high ladder mind you and with an S rank. The only 2 Pokemon that can naturally outspeed Dragapult in the Meta are just Electrode and Electrode-H, both of whom give up more offense and defense to just outspeed Dragapult (btw electrode actually had a niche in Gen 4 simply because it was that fast and that was when it was only 140 Speed).

Ask them why Natdex includes megas and z-moves on the basis of them being items but not other items like the incenses or why the whitelist for moves like Assist doesn't go based on the last available game it was in like it would for Metronome. With hazards being so prominent in Gen 9, yeah it would be a big fucking deal. If you have Volcarona, you either have to have really good hazard removal or you have Volcarona hog your HDBs slot. Your teammates who often switch around more would struggle to against hazard stacking so Volcarona can be at full health when rocks are up. It also means any other stealth rock weak Pokemon on your team will also be crippled too.

Anon, the guy who revolutionized the strat literally did so as a meme. Galarian Slowbro was his bromon and he wanted to utilize its gimmick to the fullest extent.
People saw he was successful with such a bizarre team and decided to copy it, thinking Quick Claw was the secret spice rather than BO+screens (because he claimed it was before admitting he was just fucking with people).

My prediction is that Quick Claw will be banned, and the team will be slightly adjusted to replace Glowbro with something better and give the mons better items. And it'll continue to thrive until Light Clay is inevitably banned.

Boots and Tera aren't Volcarona-targeted buffs, but they are buffs that heavily benefit Volcarona.
Volcarona was great in gens 5, 6, and 7.
Most SR weak mons just became unviable, but Volc was so good that it was worth playing around such a huge weakness.
Boots just made it easier to play around the weakness, and being able to Tera, especially into Grass, just covered up more of its shortcomings.

It's also because offensive Pokemon in general are just better than defensive ones and get powercrept way faster

For every Purifying Salt Garga there's a fucking Zero to Hero Palafin and Sword of Ruin/Beads of Ruin Chien-Pao/Chi-Yu

As a result, more often than not, it's the offensive shit that ends up broken and the defensive shit that, while strong, still ends up quite manageable

The complaint isn't that Volcarona was banned. Not for most people, at least.
The complaint is that it was quickbanned. Quickbans are usually reserved for shit that's insanely broken, like Flutter Mane or Palafin.
Volcarona has been fine since November, Home dropped a bunch of strong mons to raise the overall powerlevel of OU, Volc wasn't even on the poll prior to its quickban, Volc WAS on other polls before this one and the voterbase thought it was fine, and it was allegedly banned because of "an unprecedented amount of write in support".
You can agree with the ban as many have, but this is not it.
