Honestly? Venusaur and Meowscarada, like them or not, are both at least interesting in terms of typing and design. Compare to Rillaboom, who literally has nothing going on. I'll take interesting and (potentially. I like Meowcarada myself, but...) bad over incredibly boring any day of the week. That's also why I like Serperior - it has the most unusual design and stat distribution (not to mention unusual capability in the form of Contrary Leaf Storm) of the pure grass starters.
