People usually have a disconnect between the anime and the games; Meowth is a big wrench in the corporate depiction of Pokemon as fun mindless critter pets that many stand by. The thing is, the games have basically done the same things at this point and GF just tries to skirt around it and hope nobody thinks too hard about if it's cool to be using Rotoms as battle slaves when you had one in SM that you regularly chatted with as if it were a person.

The "corporate" description is litterally only applied to the western companies interacting with TPCi. TPCi have little say in presenting the universe - they need to to TPC's line and TPC MUST follow Game Freak's direction about the series as a whole.
And Game Freak consider their creations above such small-minded pigeonholing.
