It's because the kids who bought the first games in the 90's were in highschool when BW came out, and you know highschool is the age when every kid pretends the things they liked as kids were "childish" and force themselves to "grow up" and be more "adults", by the time the next gen came out they got over that phase and the games sold again, but the fanbase never left, it was just a phase that around a million of fans worldwide went through.
