Nah, they need to stop adding to the trash heap of countless forgettable new pokemon. 20-40 actual new pokemon a gen if they're actually good. Expand previous mons with subspecies and variants. Use what we got.

nta but like the dolphin and marine fish is convergent evolution because both organisms faced the same selection pressures and occupied very similar niches. this is not how they chose to do it in pokemon. they recoloured something that lives a completely different life from a normal tentacool, doesn't share a habitat with it, or a niche, and then called it convergent evolution. it's stupid. i do like the funny mushroom jellyfish line though, i just don't like how they decided to say they happened. just call them regional forms honestly. my bachelor of science majoring in ecology will not allow me to call this shit convergent

GameFreak has never called Toedscool or Wiglett regional fakes or convergent evolutions, they’re both fan made terms.

And in terms of gameplay, they’re just regional forms that make no sense as actual forms due to their lore (jellyfish into mushroom and mole into eel make no sense) so they’re classified as new Pokémon. They’re not “taking” any Dex spaces even if they’re fillery, so who the fuck cares. Mechanically it offers a new Pokémon with new types and moves.

yeah i did a bit of digging and you're right they have never specifically called them convergent evolutions but the way they talk about them in the dex and in the wiglett reveal video they pretty much just describe a real life convergent evolution. which is the only issue i have with them. i actually like the toedscool line a lot like i said before.

Its likely it was just Wigglett's gimmick which they reused for Toeds.
But its not a new category proper like regionals.

Wiglett is shit but Toadstool is pretty cool
Also I find funny how there's only two pokémon like this because the concept is actually extremely limiting so GF probably gave up on the gimmick already

i mean moles and eels dig, so in the pokemon world this body shape is needed for digging for some reason. it's not so dependent on environment. With cool and cruel, mushrooms and jellyfish evolved caps for different reasons, but converged on a similar look

Maybe this concept wouldn't have been so bad if they perhaps made a new jellyfish pokemon to base toedscool on. Unlike the jellyfish you just posted, tentacool doesn't look like a mushroom at all so changing it's color scheme and pretending it's a mushroom now just feels so wrong

This and its evo are some of the ugliest and laziest designs yet. Even the paradoxes look creative and interesting by comparison.

Shrooms in odd Gens (Paras/Parasect, Shroomish/Breloom, Foongus/Amoongus, Morelull/Shiinotic) and bunnies in even Gens (Marill/Azumarill, Buneary/Lopunny, Bunnelby/Diggersby, Scorbunny/Raboot/Cinderace) have become staples so they needed a shroom for Gen 9 since it's an odd Gen.
