They feel too constrained by having specific references to a particular thing, usually related to the region. When done right, it's fine -- the Gen IV and V starters were OK, and the Gen VI starters (while a little on the nose) were probably the upper limit. But I would much rather have my starter be my little buddy / cool ass pet than some potential Smash Bros. character full of "personality." Meowscarada and the Gen VIII starters are the worst offenders for sure; I can't stand Rillaboom especially, it just seems way too locked into a specific archetype and not just a cool grass gorilla like it should've been. Also, Skeledirge is too fucking overdesigned and has waaaay too much going on (crocodile, singer, rockstar?, some sort of death god thing, the little bird, summons a microphone, somehow a Ghost type...). I fear that's going to be more common come Generation X considering how popular he turned out to be.
