Back in 4th gen Smogon had a mission statement that said something to the effect of "we try to keep out battle rules as close to in game as possible, both so you can easily explain the rules to someone and have a 'Smogon' battle with them, and because to do otherwise would mean we're not playing Pokemon anymore, we're playing Smogonmon." Then in 5th gen they started doing more and more complex bans and took increasingly contrived steps to make the game "work" for them. If you have to ban the main mechanic of Pokemon or huge swaths of Pokemon, you aren't playing Pokemon anymore.
