Looking back on the first season I have to wonder what they were trying to do. It doesn't follow the games or can be used as complementary material since most anime shit is anime original and stays in the anime.

When you think about it it's pretty crazy how they let the anime do it's own thing for over two decades just like that.
Not even attempting or trying to follow or adapt the games in any way shape or manner. All sorts of characters being the characters only in name, borderline OC donut steels.
For a franchise as autistic with keeping things sanitized and in-line as Pokemon is that the anime could do whatever the fuck it wanted like this is really weird.

I wouldn't call gen 1 quickly clean to be honest, specially with all those implications that the pokemon world is just our world after some kind of third impact esque even happened. I think it just became like that after the global appeal of the franchise was threatened by all those religious zealots calling it evil. Still, pretty weird that the didn't just follow the games that released a year prior. At least today one can understand why the anime has to be the way it is.

It's implied in the first gen games too. Pokemon were originally meant to be non-native to earth, arriving just a short while before the war.

I mean if they were going to axe anything for not toeing the line they'd probably have started with the manga where people were cutting Pokemon in half and most of the major characters were outright genocidal and evil.

Come to think of it, most of OS just showcased Pikachu and the starters. That's what made the League so good, Muk and Kingler came out of nowhere and carried Ash. Still I wish OS treated the Pokemon better.

They were loud but nobody actually took them seriously at the time and they were regularly mocked, and they had no impact on the series at all. What actually had an impact was when that nigger started whining about Jynx being racist, it made them change the design of the pokemon and got Brock temporarily removed from the anime.

Most of the animations they release on youtube are like that. But you are right, If you think about it they could be making lots of money by making more than 1 anime series, yokai watch was unable to do it because nobody gives a shit about yokai watch anymore but pokemon is big enough to have different series of different genres and have every single one of them be successful.
