1) Gambling. People open packs because they're addicted to getting their hits. It's a thrill that consumes scarce sealed product.
2) Targeting children. 90s kids became addicted when they were children and that's why we bust packs today. 90s kids have their own children and pass the addiction along them only this time adults are also participating so there's less incentive for modern kids to age out like many 90s kids did.
3) Multimedia. TV show, movies, games, merchandise, and the cards all bring people into the pokemon world.
Pokemon is more engrained in American culture than world war II something beanie babies could never compete with.
