Sure it made things feel more grindy, but finding Pokemon you want felt more rewarding to me, and it even made encounters more interesting, since you never always knew what Pokemon you were going to encounter, even in caves full of nothing but Zubats and Geodude there was a chance at finding a shiny. And besides, you can simply use repel if you didn't want any encounters. To me, finding Pokemon, which is part of the games core gameplay loop, feels way more trivial in modern games. Bring back the grind.
