I definitely think it's something to do with nighttime, be it a Poochyena evolution, Mightyena form, or Mightyena evolution.
And although true that Eevee, Rockruff, and (H) Sneasel all have daytime-specific evolutions, it doesn't make sense to give Poochyena a daytime evolution if Mightyena isn't already a nighttime one.
Granted we've seen that before with Cubone evolving into (A) Marowak at night in Alola, whereas normal Marowak isn't locked to daytime.
So it's still possible, but with the other hints, I just don't think it lines up.
Honestly, Alolan Marowak is my biggest fear for this whole Poochyena/Mightyena situation.
In Alola, Cubone evolves into (A) Marowak at night. (A) Marowak has no stat differences from normal Marowak. And both Marowak suck.
What I don't want is a copy/paste of that with Poochyena where
In Paldea, Poochyena evolves into (P) Mightyena at night. (P) Mightyena has no stat differences from normal Mightyena. And both Mightyena suck.
I keep looking at Obstagoon and Annihilape for hope. Linoone was Mightyena's counterpart, and Annihilape is an all new evolution for an equally bad early-route 'mon.
(G) Mr. Mime, too. Since normal Mime Jr. evolves into (G) Mr. Mime in Galar, and (G) Mr. Mime has an exclusive evolution into Mr. Rime.
