>>54109353Digimon's livelihood has never been about designs, but rather about how it's handled by its owners. There have been points in time (particularly when Adventure was on Fox Kids), where Digimon had a higher view count than Pokemon. There have been different times in history where Digimon was marketed and handled well, and was very popular as a result.
A majority of the time, though, there's been long droughts of no products, no games, no anime, no budget, no localization efforts, no faith by Bandai, etc etc. Basically at every single opportunity, Digimon is being sabotaged in some way.
Pokemon had a secure placement at all times on channels, with great time slots. Digimon is the opposite, constantly changing channels and often being at horrible time slots. Pokemon has 1-2 games yearly. Digimon goes years without a game, and when it does come out, the translation is a complete mess and it has no budget. The worst thing ever was when they hired a new startup American Company to create All Star Rumble to "test the waters" in the west. That was a big flop, but it was Completely expected, as the game was absolute shit. We would've never gotten games again if it weren't for tons of petitions.
It's just too little, too late, in all aspects. The only way Digimon can really come back into mainstream is if it has a big budget release and then gets a random explosion like how Dark Souls or Persona did.
