It's hard to hate Hoenn cause it just kinda coasts, it might've been more divisive back when Gen III was the new generation or when Gen IV came out since it'd be the obvious comparison, but now Gen III just blends into the background, it doesn't have the collage of opinions of Gen I or the outspoken fanbases of Gens II, IV and V. And pretty much everything from Gen VI onwards is considered Nu-Pokemon.

It's also not like Gen III is secretly underrated or anything, it is an aggressively average entry for the series being far below the even lacking story standards in Gens IV and V but also not having the open exploration of Gens I and II, but at the same time it's not the worst at anything either.

So I'd say calling it the "It's just there" generation is apt.

My first Pokemon game was Hoenn, so I may be bias, but I think Gen 3 is a good game.
Exactly that: a GOOD game. There's some features it lacks, but new features that help it be it's own thing. It has the perfect balance between new (at the time) and old pokemon. It may be linear, but every line has a great biome. And each is so unique you don't feel you are repeating too many areas.
Even backtracking isn't much of a hassle: the Rustboro tunnel makes the mainland connection a breeze, and with surf and fly, you can even skip bigger sections with ease.
Is a shame some areas go completely ignored or missed (the shoal cave and the fast currents come to mind, since there's no reason to visit those places), but at least when you find them it feels like an interesting discovery, and you go back and forth to find every nook and cranny.

Even the postgame: the Battle Tower/Frontier gives a new taste about pokemon use. I feel this was the true birth of competitive pokemon, where single players got a taste of "multiplayer".

Hoenn did good, and Hoenn did bad. Saying "it's just there" makes it a disservice. If anything, I suggest everybody to start here if they ever want to start pokemon.

That only did more harm than good, because Game Freak could give a rat's ass about game balance. Gen 3 tried with mixed attackers, but then Sinnoh came and threw everything through the window.

no? Milotic isn't that good and there's no reason to use it in RSE over the myriad other better water types in the game. Either way, player guides were abundant back in the day and I remember playground friends helping me find some cool shit like Bagon back then

I do, that was fun. I remember the excitement my friends and I all had, and when the disappointment came we just laughed it off and went on with our lives. Those playground rumors are a piece of videogame magic that doesn't exist anymore because of the internet and I miss them greatly.

I think what really helps it is even if so many flaws are fairly apparent they did a great job with pokemon design in this generation. And if the new monsters are cool you forget about all the water and lack of day/night and the less compelling story.

If the new pokemon in a generation don't match that high design standard the game basically has to be perfect in all other fields (Gen V) otherwise it ends up like Gen IV.

I did. it got dark pretty early in game in gen 2. if you couldn't do that then your parents treated you like a retarded faggot. plus there were weekends where I would go to my friend's house and we would do mystery gift before midnight and then right after midnight.

You could do this for literally every single region/gen. At least this gen made up for it with the best iterations of contests and berry/treat creation, Battle Frontier, good record mixing mechanics, exclusivity with Fr/Lg to get non Hoenn-dex Pokemon to give them a feeling of rarity, and if we really want to stretch Colo and GoD to extend the postgame even more.

this might come to you as a surprise but I was a child both before and after the internet became a widespread source for videogame information. 13 years is enough time for technology to evolve. Playground rumors were all over the place in gen 3 and almost none went around by the time Diamond and Pearl were out because the internet was so accessible.

I did play on weekends and I did play at night, but I had to wait the entire week to get to that point. That's shit design. A shorter cycle with the ability to choose the time of day by resting or using a menu is just as effective in gating content to specific times without fucking people over and I know I'm right because not only does almost every game with a day/night cycle do this, but pokemon itself has started doing this too
