>>54116907I don't meticulously plan my team at the very beginning, but I do have some parameters that I at least usually follow. I prefer to use Pokemon native to whatever region the game takes place in (Kanto Pokemon count in Gen 2 because Johto and Kanto are supposed to be closely connected), and I like to have some variety in terms of color and appearance.
I also try to have at least one Pokemon that reaches its final form at a high level or requires an item that you don't get until later in the game. It's probably the most autistic of these rules, but to me, it feels appropriate to have your team not be "fully realized" until you're close to the end of your journey. When I'm getting ready to take on the final Gym or the last evil team plot, that's when I want to be rocking a fully evolved roster.
I usually don't use Legendaries, but I'm willing to use a trio Legendary on occasion. Depends on how tough/asshole-ish the ROMhack is, since I hardly ever play vanilla anymore.
