Most people dropped the franchise, so what you have left are lifelong fans (like myself that gives every gen a chance) and zoomers that have no idea what it was like and grew up on Gens 3-5 which is why you see so much praise for those gens because they considered THOSE the norm.

Hoenn/Sinnoh/Unova are all great and then you also have remakes of Kanto/Johto too

I liked Ruby when it came out but it really was disappointing there was no post game. Yes you had Rayquaza and the Regis but they could have at least gave us something new. Battle frontier in emerald is perfectly fine for me a it didn't have to be a whole new region but only a battle tower that I already played a shit ton in crystal and had stadium was lame as fuck.

Pokemania died before Gen 3 was out, even by the time Crystal came out the franchise was dead. Gen 3 was what turned a dead 2 year trend into an enduring franchise.

i mean hes right but i was a kid without internet there so i was just shocked they made other pokemon games. like damn do people know how many dropped pokemon around that time? its like every person i talk to that isnt autistic and a bit older than me. i still love hoenn and think its part of the classics but even as a kid i thought the story/team was lame as fuck compared to rocket and not being able to catch so many pokemon was really fucking awful (especially when you dont know you need another game to trade between them so i didnt have it). when i learned as a teen they cut the day/night cycle the previous game had (which i did not not play) i was confused. the sprites are also a huge downgrade to the lovingly animated sprites in gen 2. i only saw those later on when i had internet. it wasnt as obvious back then but the signs are there for how the brand thinks and what would happen in the future. gen 3 was my first real pokemon game and its a freaking great game to me cause it does do a lot of very soulful things i could talk all day about aside from just playing it as a child (i loved putting plushies into my base and seeing yourself in the rain puddles or walking through ash grass was so cool) but some things like cutting obvious basic ass features that should be in every entry moving forward is just not ok at all.

Gen 3 drove me away as a kid, and Gen 4 kept me away as an adult.
For me, SMT fills the niche that modern pokemon left behind, similar to Dark Souls replacing Zelda.

I definitely left the franchise when Gen 3 came out. The only reason I came back is because emulation exists. If emulators were never a thing, I doubt Pokemon would still be popular today

The devs have directly stated in interviews that they believed Pokemania was dead while working on RS. A game can't kill something that was dead before it existed.

Gen 2 didn't kill Pokemania, it died out naturally. There was an increase in apathy for anyone who was just in it for the fad. Most kids where I was from stopped playing Pokemon before Gen 3 came out. Some stuck it out a bit longer, but while Pokemon has always been popular and profitable, Pokemon didn't really become "in" and "cool" again here until Pokemon Go, many years later.
