Masuda actually understood Pokémon a lot and he absolutely had a big task in keeping the series alive past gen 2. He made some decent games which were improved by other directors in the upper versions, but it's still all his groundwork. I believe BW is the most polished games he's done and his peak. He still had some passion with XY and doing a worldwide release but everything he was involved with since was dogshit and pure cashgrabs.
