Psychic is notable because it has less interactions with other types than most others. Only Normal and Dragon have fewer interactions.

Fun fact: Steel and Dark had different type match ups in the beta.

Steel was:

Weak to Water and Electric
Resistant to Poison, Fighting, and Roc
Immune to itself

Dark was:

Weak to Normal, Bug, and itself
Resistant to Psychic and Ghost
Immune to nothing

Both types were made resistant/immune to Psychic and weak to Fighting in the final game.

Psychic is the fifth most common type (anfter Water, Normal, Grass, and Flying) and the third type to be paired with every other type (after Flying and Water). It’s more common than Bug and Fire. Every generation so far introduced at least one Psychic specialist. Psychic has the most Mega Evolutions, with 10. Psychic has the most Legendary and Mythical Pokémon, with 16 Legendaries and 7 Mythicals.

Normal should've been both 1/2 effective against Fairy and resistant to it, for the same reason it cancels itself with Ghost outside of fringe cases

It’s not remotely forgettable
It is crammed down our throats all the time. You cannot play Pokémon without knowing about Psychic in some capacity.

Fairy types took it's spotlight. A type that checks Fighting types like it does, but also checks Dark and Dragon types? Sold. Unless a pokemon is Fairy/Psychic or there's little Fairy types in the roster, why bother with Psychic types?
