It's obvious they changed the typings after seeing which Pokemon were being used in Japanese tournaments at the time. Water, electric, normal, psychic and ice were all extremely common. Meanwhile, fire and fighting types were basically unused.

So steel's weaknesses were swapped to less common types (and ground for some reason) and it was given resistances to normal types and their huge movepool. while Dark had its normal weakness swapped out for the less common fighting type.

I wonder what the point of beta Steel type was?
Purely color? It doesn't seem to solve any problems in game balance. But it is definitely less OP for it.

Not surprised at all, GF has always sucked at balancing their games and the typechart in particular.

Also in retrospect Steel type was a mistake, no type should have that many resistances. Fairy gets a ton of shit, sometimes rightfully so, but Steel was the original OP snowflake type.

What's the reasoning for this? Are they still stuck in the mindset they had during Gen I, back when Psychic and Dragon actually were special?

That is what I mean by color.
Dark was clearly a solution to the Psychic issue. Fairy was clearly a solution to the Dragon issue.
Beta Steel seems far more vacuous. Appearing to basically exist purely for world-building.
