I have have played a pokemon game to the end I have started so many different versions and I always get past the first 3-4 gyms and then stop playing but I want to play fire red all the way to the end and experience all the content. Should I go for a stacked best strat team or will I be ok if I just do whatever team I want?

Just play it and have fun with it, make the team of pokemon you like the best. Try to balance the team though, I usually can get a good spread if I plan out certain pokemon and their moves, and use duplicates of types I like in other games. I have fun just thinking of different move combinations and team builds during the day. I usually try to use the same team the whole game and build it up were possible.

Kanto & Johto are my favorite though, so it's easy for me to play the earlier games a lot and stay engaged. I liked Gen III too. I don't really have an interest in the newer games and regions.

Pretty much. They made it so you can beat Brock with just Charmander, that should tell you how the rest of the game will be.
