The inspiration of the line just evades people because most have settled on Magmar as a yokai and Magmortar is a wtf, even bulbapedia just mentions it's spikes being "like an iguana".
But I have allot of pokemon design theories and Magmortar makes the Magby line Pokemon's generic red hell devils.
Demon Baby > Lesser Demon > Greater Demon
They didn't even give it Dark type so they clearly wanted to hide it but gives hints in the design and dex entries instead of outright say it.

Demons are ugly and tend to have malicious expressions and look more human than duck.
