Game Freak added it for kids of a certain generation, but that doesn't truck with more modern children (competition for attention IS a thing these days, even if all you had was two pokémon games and local access) and those kids of a certain generation are worth less than the newest influx of kids.
This shit was never meant to grow with you, it's why you even got it in the first place, because it didn't suddenly pivot to selling to me in my late teens and getting ready to face college in 200, but went for 7 year olds again. Then again in Gen 3 and so on right up to today. Blame the environments kids get raised in these days - too many entertainment options lead to too short an attention span to want to stick with something if it shows the merest hint of difficulty for their skill level. Didn't hinder as much 20 years ago, but when little timmy can just pull up screenclick 3000 for the endorphin rush, Game Freak need to shore up their investments.
