When I was 5 years old I was always too curious or impatient to heal up my pokemon. I just wanted to explore asap. So in Cerulean City I decided to explore first before healing up my pokemon. Ofcourse Gary was around the corner and sent my ass back through Mt. Moon.

I also didn't think much about saving. I remember I encountered Articuno and I ended up fainting it. I didn't save or bring pokeballs. I wasn't thinking, I just wanted to explore.

I was actually extremely anxious as a kid, so I saved all the time, sometimes several times in a row. I was also scared my game would be wiped if I put it through the airport security X-ray machine lol, so I don't think it's really a matter of intelligence.

The first few days I had Gold I didn't know that you could save...
However I figured that shit out myself. I hate this overly handholding shit with heals at every corner, unskippable cutscenes still to this gen and much more bullshit of this kind. But what can I expect? The newest protag is literally modeled after a preschooler.
I still think kids should figure shit out themselves.

There are so few options mechanically- if you had any shred of critical thinking skills you would explore the menus. Correct me if I’m wrong, but they all had instruction booklets as well

When I was a kid playing pokemon for the first time I refused to heal because I thought nurse joy was some kind of undercover team rocket agent trying to steal my pokemon. Once my party wiped and I was forced to hand them over in a cutscene I realized how retarded that was.

Never had issues with the OP's problem, but I keenly remember my first playthrough when I was maybe four or five seeing Pokemon in the houses and thinking they would give them to me if we were friends. I was too stupid to figure out throwing a Pokeball despite being shown how to do it via the old man. In my defense, Ash recruited a lot of mons via friendship first before putting them in a Pokeball, so I thought you had to do the same thing. Cue being lost in Mt. Moon too, and I ended up in Cerulean with a Blastoise. My friend told me how to catch and then I just started over because I was too strong not to just KO enemy Pokemon.

If you want another retarded child story, I also thought depositing Pokemon meant killing them for good. For some reason the "de" made me think of death and I didn't fully comprehend what that and withdrawing meant. I also thought six was the limit of Pokemon you could have and they threw away whatever excess mons I caught.

To be fair it wasn't totally unfounded, I watched the anime before I started playing the games and I thought I remembered seeing an episode where team rocket ran that exact grift. I assumed the same thing happened in-game wanted to avoid it by refusing to heal until I reached the next town.

Not knowing English is a pretty good excuse, I speak it fluently and I still managed to get so lost before the seventh gym that I assumed I was supposed to stay on the SS Anne and had softlocked the game somehow

This is actually a perfect example of how modern games are 'easier'.

You were allowed to make mistakes like this. In a modern game if you tried to go straight to a new route an NPC would stop you like "woah trainer! Why don't you look around the city first?"

The problem is a lot of them don't. My eight year old has been playing video games for two years now and still at least once a week I'll hear "I was doing X on my Switch and the battery died and I hadn't saved at all." And every time I tell him, "one, save often, two, plug in your Switch when the power gets low." Meanwhile my six year old is the opposite. He saves constantly. He plays tethered to the wall, plugged in (I almost worry about this too, because he's constantly adjusting the usb port to make sure it's plugged in, but those things break easily if you wiggle them too much). Some kids just don't figure things out and make the same mistakes over and over.

Doesn't this exact thing happen in Pewter city? And again in Johto, I think Violet city. And that guy in Hoenn that is investigating his own footprints stopping you from leaving Oldale town.

English is not my first language and I was able to learn what each english word meant by association playing Blue when I was 4. I knew a word with the letters S A V E meant saving and so on. Unless you are dumb, it’s pretty natural.

Maybe you were just a dumb kid. I first played Pearl when I was 4, I made my own pokedex where I wrote down the type and moveset for each pokemon I encountered. I even got a streak of 12 in the Battle Tower.

Losing one fight isn't really cruel, it just teaches you that preparation is important. If you have the chance to heal your pokemon you should, and if you can't get to a center then having a supply of potions, antidotes, etc is something to keep in mind. If you missed out on catching a cool pokemon, now you know to carry extra balls, and teaches you the value of both status moves and trying different strategies to keep it from fainting/running.
Failure in pokemon is negligible, and can be a good teaching tool. It also makes the next time you succeed feel that much sweeter.

It was a fucking hell of a revelation when I figured it out. All that mystery and suspense built up, then BOOM, I understand all at once that there's a whole world on that little card.

There are no 'cutscenes' in RBGY or GSC, and at no point do you ever hand your Pokemon over to a Team Rocket member after wiping. So not only are you retarded, you're also a liar.
