Brontosaurus is Greek for "thunder lizard". If they're turning the legendary beasts into dinosaurs, then a brontosaurus was the most likely choice for Raikou.

Brontosaurus literally means Thunder Lizard.
So if we're turning the legendary cats into dinosaurs, turning the electric one into a brontosaurus seems obvious.

The designer confirmed that she modeled Suicune after a leopard, Raikou after a tiger, and an Entei after a lion.

There are inspirations from other things in their designs, but those are the primary inspirations

Are most Dino Raikou art drawn as sauropods? I didn't bother looking up any art but I imagine people draw Raikou as various types of dinosaurs and it just so happen that some of them ended up as sauropods

bulk seems more fitting for entei, crossing out triceratops, anklyosaur, etc. so of the most iconic dinos you have pterodactyl, which is too much of a radical departure, and ones too redundant with suicune like bipedal predators, you have sauropod left

Because they’re not real ancestors. There’s a reason why past paradoxes are ridiculous. They could’ve just made reasonable ones for reasonable Pokemon but they just chose stuff like a puffball, magnets, mushroom, ghost, mammals and were just ‘lol make it a dinosaur’.
